Exceptional Service to Students Award Recipient Spotlight

About Dr. Omar Ruvalcaba

Dr. Omar Ruvalcaba is an Associate Professor of Psychology at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) whose work bridges culture, technology, and collaborative learning. A proud first-generation college graduate, he earned his B.A. from UCLA before completing his M.S. and Ph.D. at UC Santa Cruz. His research focuses on how cultural practices and technology shape learning experiences for Latinx and Mexican-heritage youth, with a particular emphasis on supporting students in STEM fields. Through his teaching, mentoring, and scholarship, Dr. Ruvalcaba is dedicated to creating inclusive learning environments that empower first-generation and underrepresented students to thrive.

To learn more about the journey behind this recognition, we asked a few questions to Dr. Ruvalcaba about what the Exceptional Service to Students Award means, the challenges faced along the way, and the inspirations that continue to guide this work.

What does receiving this award mean to you?

“Receiving the Exceptional Service to Students Award validated the work and effort I have dedicated to supporting students. It is both a personal and professional honor that encourages me to continue finding ways to help students succeed.”

What inspired you to do the work that led to this recognition?

“As a first-generation student, now a faculty member, and the son of immigrants, I know how difficult it can be to navigate higher education without guidance. There were many things I had to figure out on my own. Because of that, I’ve made it my goal to mentor, teach, and share my experiences so students feel less alone in their journey.”

Can you share a challenge that shaped your path?

“At one point during my time at UCLA, I almost faced dismissal. It was an isolating and lonely experience, made heavier by the stigma of struggling academically. Over time, I built stronger relationships with friends and family and learned to ask for help when I needed it. That moment of struggle shaped who I am today and deepened my commitment to supporting students through their own challenges.”

How do you stay motivated?

“I prioritize recharging by spending time with my daughter and family. I also stay grounded by spending time outdoors, going to the gym, practicing yoga, or attending live music events. These activities allow me to bring energy and focus back to my students.”

What impact do you hope your work will have long term?

“I hope that the students I mentor will carry the support forward—whether by mentoring others, giving back to their communities, or simply helping someone who needs guidance.”

Who has influenced you the most in your work?

“My parents, Felipe and Leticia, are my greatest inspiration. They left everything behind in Mexico to come to the United States and worked tirelessly to provide for my siblings and me. Their example of perseverance and sacrifice continues to guide my values and work.”

What message would you like to share?

“I often think of a quote by my late friend and colleague, Dr. Miguel Nava, who wrote in his dissertation:
“For the love of science, and the mystery of love.”
His dedication to his community continues to inspire me to give back and stay committed to students.”

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Omar Ruvalcaba as the recipient of the Exceptional Service to Students Award. This honor recognizes not only his dedication to teaching and mentoring but also his unwavering commitment to uplifting and guiding students through their academic and personal journeys.
