Q&A: How Nazarian College’s MSBANA Program Prepared 15A Operations Research Analysis Officer Joshua Cabal for Success in the U.S. Air Force

Joshua Cabal, who recently earned his Master of Science in Business Analytics from Nazarian College, is about to begin his Air Force career as a 15A Operations Research Analysis Officer, a newly established role that uses mathematical modeling and data analytics to evaluate current and future operations, measure the effectiveness of programs and systems, and provide insights for decision-making.

In this Q&A, he shares his journey to this role, the challenges he faced during the application process, and how his education at California State University, Northridge, particularly in the BANA program, has prepared him for this next step. His story highlights the power of a strong analytical education and its potential to open doors in diverse fields, including the military.

What inspired you to pursue a career as a 15A Operations Research Analysis Officer in the Air Force?

Since childhood, I’ve been fortunate to be guided by compassionate mentors who helped me realize my purpose: to contribute to a world where people wake up inspired, feel safe at work and return home fulfilled. I believe commissioning into the Air Force is where I can have the most agency in making this vision a reality. It’s one of the toughest paths, but I’m confident that with the responsibility and scope of an officer’s role, I can make a significant impact on others’ lives.

Can you share more about the application process and what challenges you faced along the way?

The application process is rigorous and lengthy—at least one year from recruiter contact to selection. There are a few pathways for civilians to become an officer in the Air Force. The pipeline I’m going through is called Officer Training School or OTS.

Here’s an overview of the steps:

  • Education Requirements: Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree. After the initial recruiter contact, they take the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, which is similar to the GRE with a few aviation-related subsections. To be competitive, applicants need a score in the 75th percentile or higher across all sections (quantitative, verbal and aptitude).
  • Additional Documents: Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation, write two short essays, and participate in an interview with a recruiting office commander. My interview was with a lieutenant colonel.
  • Selection Process: Finally, the full application package is reviewed by three colonels, who rate applicants on a scale of 6 to 10 based on the “whole-person concept,” considering aptitude, leadership and potential. The process is highly competitive with selection rates typically under 10%. Hundreds of applicants from across the country compete for a limited number of spots.

How do you think your MSBANA coursework prepared you for this opportunity?

The MSBANA coursework, combined with my undergraduate mathematics studies at CSUN, has been crucial in preparing me for this role. As I’ve progressed through this program, I’ve realized that there’s always more to learn. I’ve adopted a mindset of continuous improvement, which has served me well. I’m confident will be valuable in my future military career.

The BANA program emphasizes analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in fields like operations research. The program’s focus on data analysis, decision-making frameworks, and optimization techniques has helped me develop the expertise needed to succeed in both academic and professional settings, including highly competitive fields like the military.

What skills from your studies do you think will be most useful in your military role?

The team-based projects and group work in the MSBANA program were invaluable in honing the soft skills necessary for leadership. Active listening, emotional intelligence and understanding both individual and team needs will be essential in my new role. While technical skills are important, I believe ensuring that everyone has what they need to do their best work is critical for any leadership position.

From a technical perspective, the program’s focus on statistical modeling, forecasting and advanced data analysis will directly apply to my work as a 15A officer where operations research drives much of the strategic decision-making.

What are your long-term career goals within the Air Force and beyond?

I plan to serve in the military for at least 20 years. While career progression for a 15A is not strictly defined, I know I will be assigned to various exciting roles. Many officers work at the Pentagon, teach at the Air Force Academy or serve at different bases. The Air Force moves officers to new assignments frequently to spread their knowledge and experience in different environments.

Beyond my military career, I hope to make a positive impact on others, especially my family. My parents moved from the Philippines to the U.S. around 2000, and I’ll be the first in my family to serve in the military. I hope my journey will inspire others to follow a similar path.

Do you have any advice for other students interested in similar opportunities?

My advice would be to understand your “Why” deeply. I spent months reflecting on why commissioning was important to me. That clarity of purpose helped me overcome setbacks. For example, I applied in November 2024 but wasn’t selected. Instead of letting that define me, I used it as motivation. I knew, with absolute confidence, that this is where I belong, and I persevered.

For students interested in opportunities like mine, I strongly recommend considering a program like MSBANA. The coursework equips you with a strong foundation in data analytics and problem-solving that will set you apart in competitive fields like the military and many others. Whether you’re looking to enter the Air Force, business analytics or any data-driven role, the MSBANA program provides the skills and mindset needed to succeed.
