New Awards and Publications for Dr. José Chávez

Dr. José Chávez (Department of Special Education) will be receiving theDorothy Ungerleider Award at the 48th Annual Association of Educational Therapists conference in November. This award was established in 2003 in honor of AET’s founder and first president, Dorothy Ungerleider, for her creative vision, initiative, and leadership. This award recognizes an individual who has made exceptional contributions to expand knowledge and visibility of the field of educational therapy beyond the Association of Educational Therapists. Membership in AET is not required. Nominations must be submitted by a member of the Board of Directors and approved by a majority vote of the Board of Directors. Given its rigorous criteria, it’s only been given out 8 other times to prominent individuals like Maxine Ficksman, George McCloskey and former dean of the Michael D. Eisner College of Education, Michael E. Spagna.

Additionally, Dr. Chávez was published in the September issue of the Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine. His paper titled “Back to School, Forward to Equity: Optimizing Success for Hispanic Families” (https://www.hispanicoutlook.com/articles/back-to-school-forward-to-equity-optimizing-success-for-hispanic-families) discusses the barriers Hispanic families face in accessing specialized educational support and offers practical strategies for schools to improve awareness, strengthen family engagement, and promote equitable access from the start of the school year.
