Celebrating Dr. David Bogumil: Congratulations on your retirement!
Dr. Bogumil’s career as a lecturer in the Sociology Department at CSUN began nineteen years ago. From the very beginning, Dr. Bogumil has been a highly engaged faculty member and constant presence at Sociology Department events, including the honors reception, graduate student poster contests, Sociology Club guest speaker events, and AKD Sociology Honor Society initiation ceremonies. Dr. Bogumil has also been involved in the wider campus community having served as a CSBS Metaversity Liaison, a judge for the CSUNposium, and as a marshal at commencement ceremonies.
Prior to joining the faculty at CSUN, Dr. Bogumil received his B.A. in Communication and M.S. in Social Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Ph.D. in Sociology from Purdue University. He was a post-doctoral research associate at Arizona State University and has held faculty and teaching positions at various universities. Over the years, Dr. Bogumil has taught a wide array of courses on various topics including research methods, statistics, medical sociology, organizational theory, social inequality, gender, work, religion, urban sociology, deviance, population dynamics, and social psychology. He participated in dozens of professional development and pedagogical workshops, including the Teach Access Fellowship program. As someone who is supportive of student success, Dr. Bogumil encouraged and facilitated student research projects, frequently organizing panels at the California Association Conference for students to present their work.
Dr. Bogumil has also been involved in various grant funded research projects focused on diabetes, HIV/AIDS, mental health, and addiction. His research on substance abuse has been published in the North American Journal of Psychology and Social Behavior and Personality. Earlier work of Dr. Bogumil’s on reciprocity during the Cold War was published in Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology, Conflict Management and Peace Science, and Peace Economics, Peace Science, and Public Policy. His contributions to the profession include being a reviewer for the academic journals – Basic and Applied Social Psychology, Social Science Computer Review, and North American Journal of Psychology. He also has reviewed books and book chapters for Sage, Routledge, and Wadsworth.
The Sociology Department would like to congratulate Dr. Bogumil on his retirement and the two decades of teaching and mentorship that he has provided to CSUN students.
