National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “Cybersecurity in an AI-driven world.”

Artificial intelligence is transforming how we work, teach, and learn. It offers powerful benefits but also enables more convincing scams and faster attacks. CSUN’s Information Security team is sharing strategies to help students, faculty, and staff recognize AI-enabled phishing, secure personal and university data, and adopt safer technology habits.

CSUN-approved Recommendations

  • Be skeptical of “urgent” messages, even if they appear to be from a trusted source and use your name or email address. If in doubt, forward the email to abuse@csun.edu.
  • Never share passwords, MFA codes, or sensitive student/employee data over email or chat.
  • Use CSUN-approved data storage platforms for university work.
  • Use strong, unique passphrases and enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts, including your personal accounts.
  • Keep devices updated and locked. Regularly install security patches on your personal devices.
  • Use AI tools responsibly: don’t load restricted university or personal data into public AI services. Use CSUN-approved AI resources.

By fostering a culture of awareness and accountability, CSUN is committed to ensuring that technology, including AI, supports innovation while keeping our community safe.
