CSUN MA Spanish Program presented in the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Conference

On April 19th, graduate students in the Spanish program, Telvis Marquez and Ariadna Sanchez, together with Prof. Adrian Perez Boluda, presented in the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese conference that took place at Pasadena City College. Telvis Marquez work “Ayala, Buñuel, and Rodoreda: The Characteristics of Spanish Exile, Dehumanization, and Critique of Hegemonic Structures” explored how intellectual productions transform exile into a space of reflection and memory, inviting a deeper questioning of social structures and the effects of political and cultural repression.

Ariadna Sanchez’s essay “La mujer indígena: heredera de gloria cultural e injusticia” analyzed the works of Rigoberta Menchú and Eufrosina Cruz to show how indigenous women face systematic oppression from outside and inside their own group while asserting their agency and cultural resilience.

Prof. Adrian Perez Boluda presented a paper on the exclusion of the gay community during the transition to democracy in Spain after Francisco Franco’s death. In his work “La muerte de Mikel. El otro desencanto de la transicion”, he analyzed the film La muerte de Mikel by the director Imanol Uribe as a reflection on the inequalities suffered by minority groups that participated actively in the fight for democracy, but whose rights were intentionally forgotten during the process of democratization in the 80’s and 90’s.
