Accessibility for Faculty Websites

Content on your website should be accessible to all users—including individuals with disabilities. As faculty and content creators at CSUN, it’s essential that we design and maintain web content that meets accessibility standards and complies with legal requirements.

Our Mission, Guidelines and Regulations

As part of our mission to ensure that campus communication and information technology is accessible to everyone, all users should be able to understand, engage, navigate and interact with the content presented on the website regardless of ability or preference.
There are a series of web accessibility criteria that must be complied with. They are defined as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). Every criterion addresses certain accessibility barriers to improve the user experience and provide equal access to information and date (Section 508).

A11y Things To Consider For Your Website

When creating or updating content for your website, keep the following in mind:

  • Provide alternative text for images that describes what the image represents.
  • Ensure all interactive elements (e.g., links, buttons) can be accessed using a keyboard.
  • Clearly label and describe links and interactive components.
  • Use consistent heading levels to structure your page content logically.
  • Include captions and transcripts for audio and video content, as needed.
  • Meet color contrast requirements and avoid using color alone to convey meaning.
  • Design a logical tab order so users can navigate smoothly without getting stuck in a section.
  • Use a visible focus indicator to show which element is currently selected.
  • Ensure content remains functional when zoomed up to 200%.
  • Provide clear labels and instructions for online forms and ensure all form elements are accessible.
  • Make your content compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies.
