Cat Gaspard & Minsung Kwon Lead SPARK Summer Institute for Elementary School Teachers

Dr. Cat Gaspard (Department of Secondary Education) and Dr. Minsung Kwon (Department of Elementary Education) led the four-day summer institute for elementary school teachers. The institute brought educators together to deepen their understanding of fractions and data science, designing rich mathematical tasks, and applying five practices to facilitate whole-group discussions. Through collaborative learning, hands-on activities, and meaningful discussions, participants developed instructional resources to promote student engagement and mathematical thinking in their classrooms. This institute, Strengthening Pedagogical Approaches, Reasoning, and Knowledge (SPARK) in Teaching Fractions and Data Science, is funded by the Center for the Advancement of Institution in Quantitative Reasoning (CAIQR) in the CSU Chancellor’s Office.
