New Faces in Academic Technology: Meet Charlie Mahoney

Academic Technology is thrilled to welcome Charlie Mahoney as our new Instructional Technologist! Charlie brings a rich background in education and technology. Before joining CSUN, he spent eight years teaching gifted and talented students, followed by three years as a Tech Director at a Kansas charter school.
From Hulu to Higher Ed: A Passion for Innovation
He later transitioned into the tech industry, working as a Technical Support Supervisor at Hulu where he gained a deeper understanding of technology and how it relates to the user experience.
“This role honed my problem-solving skills and taught me the importance of clear communication and user-centric design along with troubleshooting techniques. These insights are invaluable in education, where technology must be seamlessly integrated to support teaching and learning.”
Charlie’s time at Hulu also emphasized the importance of continuous learning and adaptability, which are crucial in the ever-evolving field of educational technology.
Charlie returned to education as a Technology Integration Specialist and Engineering Instructor at private schools. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in music education and a Master’s degree in Gifted Education, blending creativity and innovation into his work.
Helping Shape the Future of Learning in Academic Technology
Since joining CSUN, Charlie is inspired by the faculty’s enthusiasm for leveraging technology to enhance learning and their dedication to student success. He’s excited to explore Canvas integrations, AI, and VR tools to support faculty and students.
“What excites me the most about joining the Academic Technology team at CSUN is the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of educators and technologists. I am eager to contribute to the development and implementation of cutting-edge educational technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI), that can transform teaching and learning.”
An Adventurer at Heart
Beyond his passion for educational technology, Charlie is an adventurer at heart. Last year, he embarked on a four-month world cruise, snorkeling through the Great Barrier Reef’s coral gardens, drumming with a karaoke band in Malaysia, and indulging in the vibrant street food scene in Manila.
When he’s not at work, you might find him playing racquetball, rock climbing, cycling, or even building custom musical instruments.
Please join us in welcoming Charlie to the team!
