Irish guitarist-composer Alan Mearns is internationally recognized for his musical imagination, technical virtuosity, and expressive depth. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Mearns studied in the United States with Douglas James and renowned guitarist and scholar Stanley Yates. His acclaimed recording J.S. Bach, Sei Solo reached No. 8 on the Billboard Classical Music Charts and earned praise for its bold and original approach to Bach. Soundboard Magazine described his performance of the Bach Chaconne at the Guitar Foundation of America Convention as “amongst the greatest performances of the work I’ve ever heard.”
As a performer, arranger, and composer, Mearns continues to expand the expressive possibilities of the classical guitar, combining tradition with a distinctly individual voice. His recent works include Oración and Lorca, the latter featured on his newly released album inspired by Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Mearns has presented masterclasses throughout the United States and United Kingdom, including at Yale University, Oberlin Conservatory, the Dublin Conservatoire of Music, and the University of North Texas. He also records and performs original folk- and Americana-influenced music under the name Yes the Raven.
