Program Notes
This program juxtaposes two cornerstones of the étude repertoire: the 12 Études from Frédéric Chopin’s Op. 25 and the 10 Études of Philip Glass (Book I). By pairing these cycles, the recital explores the “étude” as both a technical laboratory and a high-art form, tracing a line from Chopin’s 19th-century chromaticism to Glass’s 21st-century minimalism — the meditative austerity of Glass set against the multi-faceted emotional world of Chopin.
Dr. Hui Wu, praised by The New York Times for her “sparkling” artistry, is a world-class classical pianist whose performances shatter expectations, transforming each concert into an immersive, multidimensional journey that reimagines timeless classical music for the present moment.
