The B-Sides” by Mason Bates
and
Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius

Experience an electrifying evening with the CSUN Symphony where modern rhythm meets Nordic grandeur.

Mason Bates’s The B-Sides opens the evening with a rhythmic, contemporary sound world, drawing on influences from electronica and dance music. Known for his work at the intersection of technology and orchestral writing, Bates uses driving pulses and shifting textures to give the orchestra a fresh, energetic voice.

Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 follows with a broad, expressive work that has become one of the cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire. From its understated opening to its expansive final movement, the symphony unfolds with a strong sense of momentum and emotional depth, often heard as music of resilience and affirmation.

Together, these pieces offer a balanced program that pairs modern rhythmic vitality with the enduring power of the symphonic tradition.
