CREA Scholarship Makes CSUN Home for Students’ Ambitions
Angelina Zuniga Kramer dreamed of becoming a civil engineer after visiting construction sites with her stepfather, but her family’s financial struggles made focusing on academics difficult. As a first-generation college student accepted to CSUN in 2023, she became one of 20 freshmen selected for the university’s inaugural CREA Scholars Program, which provides renewable scholarships averaging $5,000 annually.
The program, funded by a $260,000 contribution from the CREA Foundation and matched by CSUN, specifically supports students from affordable housing communities who qualify for the Educational Opportunity Program. For Zuniga Kramer, the scholarship covered her dorm costs and allowed her to buy an iPad, replacing the phone she previously used for homework. Fellow scholar Lucio Aranda, a psychology major, was able to move closer to campus and cut his daily commute from four hours to focus on his studies.
