The Warmth of the Sun showcases a range of works created by Tierra del Sol artists, who work out of the foundation’s Sunland and Upland studios, much of which depicts what it can feel like for anyone to be alive today in the Greater Los Angeles area. There is flora, fauna, and fast food; there are hot rods, tchotchkes, and a rabbi; there’s a chessboard, a baseball stadium, and a map of the entire region’s metropolitan bus and rail system. What makes Los Angeles – and the sprawl that spreads from its center – so special is the way that the natural world, urban life, people, and myriad cultures are so enmeshed in unusual and unpredictable ways. What makes Tierra’s artists so special is the ways in which they capture the essence of this particular place with such poetry and precision.
