The Journey is the Destination: Recording Los Angeles

August 25 at 8:00 am to October 15 at 5:00 pm

Two pairs of high heels, black and gold.

The Journey is the Destination presents a diverse and multigenerational group of artists who explore different parts of Los Angeles from a range of perspectives and media including: photography, mixed-media pieces, site-specific installations, and sculpture. Their works offer new insights into many unrecognized and under-appreciated parts of Los Angeles, which have been historically neglected based on racial, class, or cultural stereotypes. The exhibition seeks to challenge Western colonial ideas of mapping by placing the power to document and share the history of a place with the individuals who live there versus state-sanctioned agencies. The exhibition artists create living documents of their respective parts of Los Angeles, offering alternative ways to think about and reimagine the city we all call home.

In conjunction with The Journey is the Destination, CSUN’s Sanborn Atlas Collection and the University Library Map Collection will present a selection of related maps and documents in the Art Galleries’ Programming Space.
