How resilient is our power infrastructure in the face of a changing climate? Across North America, extreme weather events, heatwaves, and wildfires are increasingly stressing electrical grids, raising urgent questions about how to adapt energy systems for the future.
Join us for a special talk by Dr. Pierre-Olivier Pineau, Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at HEC Montréal and Chair in Energy Sector Management. Dr. Pineau will present findings from a major research project funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ), which examines the economic and operational impacts of climate change on energy infrastructure—including transmission and distribution networks, transformers, and other critical assets. He will share his team’s modelling approach, preliminary results, and the broader implications for managing and adapting power systems.
With wildfires in California and beyond already exposing vulnerabilities in existing grids, this research offers timely insights for both local and global energy resilience.
Date: October 29, 2025
Time: 11:30AM – 1:00PM
Location: Whitsett Room | Sierra Hall, Room 451
Light refreshments will be served.
Dr. Pineau (PhD, HEC Montréal, 2000) is an internationally recognized expert in energy policy and management, with a particular focus on electricity sector reforms and sustainability. He has published extensively on energy systems and sustainable development, contributes regularly to public policy debates, and is the author of numerous government reports. His latest book, The Energy Balance (in French), was released in February 2023. Dr. Pineau is also a Fellow at the Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis of Organizations (CIRANO).
