A Landmark of the Wind Ensemble Repertoire
The CSUN Wind Ensemble performs Karel Husa’s monumental Music for Prague 1968—a searing, explosive work that transformed the world of the concert band. Rumor has it that this powerful composition was a contender for the 1969 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Yet, perhaps reflecting the longstanding bias against works written for band, the prize went to another composer that year, while Husa received the Pulitzer in 1970 for a different composition.
Whatever the reasons behind the award, Music for Prague 1968 stands as a landmark in wind ensemble literature: a work of extraordinary power, urgency, and emotional depth.
Come hear the composition that changed the concert band world.
Also on the program
Erika Svanoe — The Author’s Suite
William Grant Still — Folk Suite for Band
Dmitri Shostakovich — Festive Overture
