SAGE Banner

Join the SAGE Learning in Retirement group to learn about the camping trip of a lifetime in the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka.

Designated as a National Heritage Site, this area is a volcanic peninsula off the coast of eastern Siberia. South of the peninsula is the volcanic chain of islands of Japan.

Highlights of the trip included watching out the helicopter windows as red lava flowed down the sides of Klyuchevskoy Volcano, singing songs around the cook fires, dining on delicious pierogies, hiking to see the areas around the volcanoes, bathing in a volcanic pool murky with iron oxide, and listening to discussions by Olga Braitseva, a highly respected Russian volcanologist.
