SUMMARY:Navigating the Black Job: Embracing Blackness in Corporate America
DESCRIPTION:This event is an engineering panel that will consist of 1-2 Moderators & 7 Panelists. Each of the panelists will consist of a diverse set of Black professionals within the engineering field\, focusing on their journey to become an engineer. The moderator will ask the engineers several insightful open-ended questions that pertain to each panelist’s diverse identity (non-American\, LGBTQIA+\, varying gender identities\, people with disabilities\, etc) including their Black one\, and how it impacted/hindered their path. What things would they have done differently? The Good\, The Bad and The Ugly. No matter how high of a position you are in any field\, your social identity will still affect how you are treated and many people don’t go into the specifics of that. We’re aiming on a deep dive on the highs\, the lows\, and the list goes on.  \n  \nThe goal of this Engineering panel is to connect and help our members gain insight as to how they should navigate throughout their life as a human being that’s not just Black but also in engineering\, and throughout all their stages of life. We hope that our members are able to gain motivation and continue down this rigorous path after viewing others like themselves in their jobs and fields. An aspect of hearing back from the members will also be incorporated\, similar to an open ground discussion where everyone in the room can learn from each other\, whether they are a student or an engineering professional.

DESCRIPTION:Share this event. \nAbout this Event\nCalifornia State University\, Northridge (CSUN) will host a powerful panel discussion titled “Critical Race Theory\, Ethnic Studies\, and the Criminal Legal System: A Conversation on Justice with Black Public Defenders.” This event is designed to expose students and the wider community to critical issues related to mass incarceration\, criminal legal system reform\, and advocacy for Black communities and other groups disenfranchised by systemic inequities and state-sanctioned violence. \nThe panel will feature two distinguished Black public defenders from Los Angeles\, Ericka J. Wiley and George A. Turner\, Jr.\, who are recognized for their groundbreaking work in criminal defense and community justice advocacy. Their participation in this panel will center Black perspectives on the intersection of race\, justice\, and reform in the criminal legal system\, particularly within the context of national debates surrounding Critical Race Theory and Ethnic Studies. \nEvent Highlights\n\nEricka J. Turner\, Jr.\, also a public defender and candidate for Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge\, has spent over 15 years defending the rights of the unhoused and other marginalized groups. A graduate of UCLA’s Critical Race Studies program\, Mr. Turner’s personal experiences growing up during California’s era of mass incarceration have fueled his passion for justice and reform. He currently leads the Homeless Mobile Unit at the Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Public Defender.\n\nThis event aims to inspire and inform students on how justice can shape their personal and professional journeys\, particularly in a political climate that demands active engagement in social and racial justice work.
