SUMMARY:From the Monroe Doctrine to the Trump Corollary: Empire and Nationalism in the Américas\, 19th -21st
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Dr. Hylton explores the relationship between U.S. power and Latin American nationalism from the 19th century to the present. It traces the rise of U.S. interventions across Latin America and the Caribbean\, alongside the Good Neighbor era and Cold War conflicts. It concludes by arguing that recent U.S. actions in Venezuela reflect a declining influence in the region. Dr. Forrest Hylton has taught at the Universidad de los Andes\, Harvard University\, Northwestern University\, Universidad Nacional de Colombia\, and the Universidade Federal da Bahia (Brazil). He is the author of Evil Hour in Colombia (2006)\, translated into Spanish\, Portuguese\, and French\, and co-author of Revolutionary Horizons: Past and Present in Bolivian Politics (2007)\, also translated into French. He writes on Latin American politics and U.S. empire for the London Review of Books.
