SUMMARY:Pachucxs Revisited Performance
DESCRIPTION:The performance will take place on Sunday\, March 9\, 2025\, at 3:00pm\, at the CSUN Art Galleries. The ongoing exhibitions are open from 2:00p to -4:30pm. \nPachucas were the transgressive and resilient young Chicanas of the 1940s who defied the norms of mainstream American and Mexican immigrant feminine propriety. This performance complements the Pachucxs Revisited exhibition in the CSUN Art Galleries that runs through March 15.  \nWritten by the performers\, the 30-minute show features profound intergenerational stories\, that include queer and Zapotec voices\, about facing and fighting racism and imposed gender norms in these dangerous political times\, paralleling what the Pachucas of the 1940s lived through. \nPerformers include Chicana/o Studies majors Alina Cruz and Leslie Florentino\, staff member and Teatro Aztlan director Diana Cabral\, actor Lupe Montiel\, performance artist Melba Martinez\, who’s self portrait is part of the exhibition\, and Chicana/o Studies Professor Maria Elena Fernandez\, who also serves as the artistic director. \n* Please note: this performance contains strong language and may not be appropriate for young audiences.\n \nThis event is free of charge and open to the public. \n

SUMMARY:Pachucxs Revisited
DESCRIPTION:January 21 – March 15\, 2025\nReception: January 30\, 2025 from 5:00-7:30pm\nPachucxs Revisited is a transgenerational celebration of the iconic Pachuca\, a contested figure that disrupted tradition and gender expectations. The exhibition features ten diverse female-identified and non-binary artists\, saluting the ever-evolving and lavish symbol – La Pachuca. The invited artists’ practices challenge social\, gender\, and cultural conventions\, defying ageism and amplifying cross-generational defiance and resistance to oppressions that individuals assigned as females at birth and women-identified continue to face. Channeling their inner Pachucx in this printmaking-based project\, the artists unapologetically demonstrate their boldness through their image\, body\, culture\, and color\, asserting their place in the world. \nOrganized by Self Help Graphics & Art. \nExhibition Artists: Janeth Aparicio\, Judy Baca\, Yreina Cervantez\, Amina Cruz\, Ester Hernandez\, Jackie Hernandez “Chicas Peligrosas\,” Priscilla Hernandez\, Sandra de la Loza\, Melba Martinez\, Jaklin Romine. \nThis exhibition is made possible through generous support from the Pasadena Arts Alliance. \nAdditional support provided by the Mike Curb College of Arts\, Media\, and Communication; Instructionally Related Activities Committee; and the Arts Council for CSUN. \n \n\n\n\nImage: Ester Hernandez\, Rosie\, La Pachuca\, 2023. SUMMARY:Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:September 3 – December 5\, 2024\nReception: September 12 from 5:00pm-7:30pm\n \nBefore You Now focuses on the enduring theme of the artist’s self-portrait\, as seen in a selection of works from LACMA’s collections of photographs\, prints\, drawings\, videos\, and installation art. Primarily featuring contemporary makers\, the exhibition is an introduction to seeing American artists as they see themselves—or as they want to be seen by their public. They are shown contemplating their physicality in realistic fashion\, highlighting their persona through symbolic tropes\, or utilizing humor or conceptual methods to enlighten\, exaggerate\, or camouflage their reflective selves. Over 50 artists—including Laura Aguilar\, Kwame Brathwaite\, Kalli Arte Collective\, Roger Shimomura\, Cindy Sherman\, Rodrigo Valenzuela\, and June Wayne—display an ongoing fascination with\, or return to\, the self-portrait. Before You Now aims to broaden the topic to include many whose practice leans into an autobiographical narrative\, and explores artists who are adding to and redefining our culture by expanding on ideas of identity. \n\nTo view more videos in this series\, visit the LACMA YouTube Channel \n  \n  \n\nMain Gallery Hours\nMonday: 10am to 4pm\nTuesday: 10am to 4pm\nWednesday: 12pm to 7pm\nThursday: 12pm to 7pm\nFriday: By Appointment\nSaturday: By Appointment\nSunday: CLOSED \nFree Admission\n\nNOTE: Unless otherwise noted\, Riverside Art Museum (RAM) and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture (The Cheech) have provided these images for non-commercial purposes only associated with its own exhibitions. SUMMARY:iwitness: narratives of resistance
DESCRIPTION:August 26 – October 22\, 2024\nExhibition Reception: Thursday\, September 12 from 5:00-7:30pm\nFor almost three decades\, the iwitness project has been a multidimensional effort to resist the denial of the history of The Armenian Genocide (1915-23). Led by artists Ara Oshagan\, Levon Parian\, and architect Vahagn Thomasian—all descendants from Western Armenia—the project has photographed\, recorded\, archived\, and shared the images and stories of Armenian Genocide survivors in poignant and often unexpected ways. The project has taken multiple forms over the years – from small\, intimate portrait shows to massive public art installations to a permanent monument – and the current exhibition presents a survey of this multifaceted endeavor. Through each iteration of the project\, iwitness continues to fight the erasure of the Genocide by uplifting the images and voices of survivors and creating new generations of witnesses to their stories. \n  \n \nImage credit: Ara Oshagan and Levon Parian\, Sion Abajian\, b.
