SUMMARY:Zine-Making for Advocacy and Activism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get your message out\, and be seen with your zine! \nJoin the Library for a hands-on workshop exploring zine-making as a tool for advocacy and activism. Workshop participants will engage with the radical history of zines\, create their own\, and gain access to Know Your Rights information along with campus and community resources. \nThe workshop will focus on how to create zines for activism and advocacy. Register now and start brainstorming issues that you want to advocate for or inform your community about. Our Librarian zine-facilitators will guide you in developing your ideas\, gathering information\, and designing your self-published zine. But\, don’t worry if you don’t have a topic for this theme – ALL zine ideas and interests are welcome! \nCome\, create\, connect\, and enjoy light snacks while you zine! \nThis event is part of the Library’s Celebrando Cultura activities happening September 15 through October 15. Visit the Library’s Latinx/a/o/e Heritage Month Book Display in the lobby for books and literature that celebrate and elevate the Latinx diaspora. \nWhat is a Zine?\nA zine is a small handmade book or magazine that can be self-published and shared. People make zines for many different reasons: to spread the word about an event or political movement\, share information\, start community discussions\, or even to share art. Since the 1930s\, zines have sparked fandoms and been vital to punk and underground scenes\, feminist and queer movements\, and activist networks. They are a radical and countercultural means of self-expression and information-sharing that exist outside of mainstream publishing channels. \nZines are about DIY (do-it-yourself) creativity\, sharing ideas\, and building community. Zines can be printed in small batches on just a few pages and are often small enough to fit in a pocket. There are many styles of zines\, from folded paper to digitally published! All zines are meant to be shared\, copied and passed around. What kind of zine will you create? \nPlease RSVP on our event page.

SUMMARY:Beyond Mango Street: Updating and Diversifying Your 6-12 Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Dr. Karin J. Durán and Richard Nupoll Endowment \nWorkshop\nThis workshop aims to widen the knowledge and understanding of YA literature specifically through the lens and perspectives of Latinx/AfroLatinx/Queer protagonists. It has been 40 years since the publication of Sandra Cisneros’ critically acclaimed The House on Mango Street\, and YA literature as a genre has grown in popularity and perspectives. However\, curriculums have remained frozen in time and have tokenized certain authors. This workshop will allow us to break open the canon to multiple more pertinent perspectives\, identities\, voices\, and stories\, reinforcing the essential idea that the Latinx experience is not monolithic. We aim to enable participants to use these books in the classroom with possible writing prompts\, project ideas\, and discussion topics. \nGuest Speakers\nLuivette Resto\nLuivette Resto is an award-winning poet\, a mother of three revolutionary humans\, and a middle school English teacher. She was born in Aguas Buenas\, Puerto Rico but proudly raised in the Bronx. She is a CantoMundo and Macondo Fellow and a Pushcart Prize nominee. She has three books of poetry: Unfinished Portrait\, Ascension\, and Living on Islands Not Found on Maps. Her work has been mentioned in the LA Times and Ms. Magazine. She is the associate editor of Tía Chucha Press\, and she sits on the boards for Women Who Submit and Beyond Baroque. \nAngie Nevárez\nWith over 30 years of teaching experience\, Angie has taught every level of Spanish from 6th grade to college level courses at Emory University (Atlanta\, GA) Duke University (Durham\, NC)\, Pilgrim School (Los Angeles\, CA)\, The Archer School for Girls (Brentwood\, CA) and Chadwick School (Palos Verdes\, CA). She has a BA and an MA in Spanish Literature and Anthropology from Emory University and a second Masters in Latin American Literature from Duke University. All her professional life has hinged around being completely bilingual\, and she strives to convey to her students how many doors and world views being (at least) bilingual can open for them. Her main goal has been to ensure that all her students build a strong foundation in Spanish and develop a joyful love of the language that will make them life-long learners.
