SUMMARY:Voice of Resistance: Advancing Health Equity in LGBTQ Vietnamese American Communities
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 22\, 2024 – 12:30pm to 1:30pm\nLocation: Zoom\nCost: Free \nRegister for this event\n\n\nDrawing on 6 years of ethnography with Viet Rainbow of Orange County (VROC)\, an LGBTQ advocacy organization\, this talk argues that kinship and organizing are determinants of community health. The talk uses a transdisciplinary approach that brings together Asian American studies\, public health\, and queer of color critique to gesture towards intergenerational forms of organizing and healing in movement spaces. Amidst the collision of anti-communist Vietnamese nationalism and queer leftist politics\, this talk explores how VROC members practice chosen kinship and how that shapes their health. \nJames Huynh (he/him/his) is the son of Vietnamese refugees who come from Hue\, Viet Nam. James is an incoming assistant professor of anti-racist health policy in the Department of Health Management & Policy at the University of Michigan and currently a PhD candidate in Community Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. His scholarly and activist commitments focuses on community well-being\, family and kinship\, and social movements as paths to transforming systems of power.

SUMMARY:Art & Environmental Justice: How community led public art projects can play a role in sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 23\, 2023 – 11:00am to 12:15pm\nLocation: Noski Auditorium\nCost: Free   \n\n\n\n\n\nKristy Sandoval is a Los Angeles based artist from Pacoima. As a first generation Latinx Artivist her work touches on social justice\, and womyn empowerment themes. Her brushstrokes have been mainly dedicated to social practice art in mural work. This came about while developing arts education programming for local organizations. Through the healing power of creativity she\, along with other local artists\, changed the reputation of the neighborhood with the uprising of Mural Mile in Pacoima. This recognition led Sandoval to be the first woman muralist for the Mural Istanbul Festival in 2015. Shortly after Sandoval was presented with the Phenomenal Woman Award in 2016 by the Department of Gender & Women’s Studies at Cal State University Northridge amongst several other awards presented by the City of Los Angeles for her continued practice. Having experienced it first hand\, she believes in the healing power of art. Kristy is a self-taught muralist\, who keeps green space\, sustainability and a trauma informed approach in mind when designing new projects.
