Self-care and Black History Month
Dear College of Education Community,
February is Black History Month, a time to renew our commitment to antiracist work as an act of self-care for ourselves and our Black community. A great way to celebrate Black History Month is to engage in various activities that celebrate African American history and culture. Please see the attached CSUN events calendar. This year, CSUN will be offering numerous events that reflect the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) inspiring theme: “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” In alignment with this theme, the campus has adopted the theme of Honoring Our Roots, Strengthening Our Path, and Shaping Our Future. Ryan Mason Ed.D., Senior Coordinator of the CSUN Black House and Black Student Resource Center, has sent the following powerful message to our CSUN campus:
“This theme invites the CSUN community to explore and celebrate the vast and dynamic history of the African Diaspora—from the brilliance of ancient kingship to the enduring legacy of Black excellence across centuries. It uncovers generations ofresilience, growth, and evolution, reminding us that our story is one of continual progress and transformation. By reflecting on the triumphs and struggles that have shaped our collective journey, we strengthen our path toward equity, unity, and empowerment. Most importantly, this theme centers the next generation of scholars and changemakers, whose innovation, leadership, and commitment will carry the community into a new era of achievement and possibility.
At CSUN, we honor this theme by amplifying Black excellence within our own community. We invite you to explore the 2026 CSUN Heritage: Black History Month website, where you’ll find:
- The full event calendar showcasing opportunities to engage
- Select campus-wide resources
- Custom Zoom backgrounds to celebrate Black History Month virtually
For a list of other self-care options, please go to our COE self-care website for resources for faculty, staff, students, and the community at https://www.csun.edu/eisner-education/self-care/articles-information-self-care
May we all join in celebrating a century of Black culture, contributions, and excellence in our nation!
Warmly,
Shari
