DESCRIPTION:Be seen with your zine!\nJoin the Library for a hands-on workshop exploring zine-making as a tool for storytelling and social justice. Workshop participants will engage with the radical history of zines and be empowered to tell their own stories through zine-making\, especially as it relates to uplifting marginalized narratives and challenging power structures. \nCome\, create\, connect\, and enjoy light snacks while you zine!\nRegister now and start brainstorming the stories that you want to tell. Our Librarian zine-facilitators will guide you in developing your ideas\, gathering information\, and designing your self-published zine. \nThis event is part of the Library’s programming in observation of both Latinx Heritage Month and LGBTQIA+ History Month. But\, don’t worry if you don’t have a topic for this theme – ALL zine ideas and interests are welcome! \nWhat is a Zine?\nA zine is a small handmade book or magazine that can be self-published and shared. People make zines for many different reasons: to spread the word about an event or political movement\, share information\, start community discussions\, or­ even to share art. Since the 1930s\, zines have sparked fandoms and been vital to punk and underground scenes\, feminist and queer movements\, and activist networks. They are a radical and countercultural means of self-expression and information-sharing that exist outside of mainstream publishing channels. \nZines are about DIY (do-it-yourself) creativity\, sharing ideas\, and building community. Zines can be printed in small batches on just a few pages and are often small enough to fit in a pocket. There are many styles of zines\, from folded paper to digitally published! SUMMARY:14th Annual Banned Books Readout with Pizza
DESCRIPTION:The University Library\, Department of Journalism\, Pride Center\, and Queer Studies Program will host the 14th Annual Banned Books Readout “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read” on Wednesday\, October 14\, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Jack & Florence Ferman Presentation Room\, University Library. The keynote speaker will be author Francesca Lia Block\, and she will be giving a talk on Blacklists and Bans: Two Generations vs. Oppression.\n \n\n    Francesca Lia Block\, M.F.A.\, is the author of more than thirty books of fiction\, non-fiction\, short stories and poetry\, and has written screenplay adaptations of her work. She received the Spectrum Award\, the Phoenix Award\, the ALA Rainbow Award and the 2005 Margaret A. Edwards Lifetime Achievement Award\, as well as other citations from the American Library Association and from the New York Times Book Review\, School Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly. Her work has been translated into many languages. In addition to writing\, Francesca is a beloved and devoted teacher and edits LIT ANGELS on Substack.\n \n\n    CSUN Professor of Journalism Elizabeth Blakey will provide remarks titled “In a World Where Libraries are Under Attack\,” and her Journalism 480 History of American News Media class will give readings. RSVPs are invited but not required through University Library website. Join us for pizza at 11:15am before the event starts.
