DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist\, Susan Chan\, piano\nFriday September 25th 2026 7:30 PM\, Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall \n \nEntitled “Echoes of China: Contemporary Piano Music” this recital features a selection of piano works by six award-winning living Chinese composers\, namely Zhou Long\, Tan Dun\, Alexina Louie\, Lei Liang\, and Zhang Zhao\, as well as Japanese composer Somei Satoh.  Their music shares the common thread of embracing a blend of Asian and western traditions as well as reaching across musical boundaries. These compelling\, diverse and deeply expressive pieces works drew inspiration from Chinese folk music\, instruments\, spirituality\, poetry and philosophy.  They provide a window through which one can experience the works of some of today’s finest Asian composers.  The performer will include verbal notes and PowerPoint slides on the composers and the music in the concert. \nGeneral program info \nPianobells (2021\, Commissioned Piece) – Zhou Long \nEight Memories in Watercolor\, Op. 1 (1978-79) – Tan Dun \nMusic for Piano (1993) – Alexina Louie \nIncarnation II (1977) – Somei Satoh \nPausing\, Awaiting the Wind to Rise (2007) – Lei Liang \nTouching with Sound (2023) \nHani Love Song (2009) – Zhang Zhao \nNuma Ame (2017) \nSusan Chan is an internationally acclaimed pianist\, educator\, and artistic director whose performances have captivated audiences across four continents. Praised for her technical mastery\, expressive artistry\, and commitment to expanding the piano repertoire\, she has appeared at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall\, St Martin-in-the-Fields in London\, and Hong Kong City Hall. A passionate advocate for music by contemporary\, female\, and Asian composers\, Chan has earned numerous awards and critical acclaim for her recordings and performances.
