SUMMARY:Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:September 3 – December 5\, 2024\nReception: September 12 from 5:00pm-7:30pm\n \nBefore You Now focuses on the enduring theme of the artist’s self-portrait\, as seen in a selection of works from LACMA’s collections of photographs\, prints\, drawings\, videos\, and installation art. Primarily featuring contemporary makers\, the exhibition is an introduction to seeing American artists as they see themselves—or as they want to be seen by their public. They are shown contemplating their physicality in realistic fashion\, highlighting their persona through symbolic tropes\, or utilizing humor or conceptual methods to enlighten\, exaggerate\, or camouflage their reflective selves. Over 50 artists—including Laura Aguilar\, Kwame Brathwaite\, Kalli Arte Collective\, Roger Shimomura\, Cindy Sherman\, Rodrigo Valenzuela\, and June Wayne—display an ongoing fascination with\, or return to\, the self-portrait. Before You Now aims to broaden the topic to include many whose practice leans into an autobiographical narrative\, and explores artists who are adding to and redefining our culture by expanding on ideas of identity. \n\nTo view more videos in this series\, visit the LACMA YouTube Channel \n  \n  \n\nMain Gallery Hours\nMonday: 10am to 4pm\nTuesday: 10am to 4pm\nWednesday: 12pm to 7pm\nThursday: 12pm to 7pm\nFriday: By Appointment\nSaturday: By Appointment\nSunday: CLOSED \nFree Admission\n\nNOTE: Unless otherwise noted\, Riverside Art Museum (RAM) and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture (The Cheech) have provided these images for non-commercial purposes only associated with its own exhibitions. SUMMARY:Building Good Kids: How Twentieth-Century Jewish Culture Tried to Save the World One Child at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Professor Miriam Udel\, Emory University\, will deliver the 12th Annual Maurice Amado Foundation Lecture in Jewish Ethics on Dec. 2\, 4:00-5:15\, in Johnson Auditorium. In the early decades of the twentieth century\, a lively\, multifarious literature for children sprang into being across four continents in the Jewish hybrid language of Yiddish. The cultural and educational leaders who created this canon had an overarching goal\, across various political ideologies\, of raising “mensches”: future adults who would act ethically to create a shenere un besere velt\, a more beautiful and better world. How did they imbue children’s reading material with their ethical vision\, and how did they make their ethical commitments palatable for young readers?

SUMMARY:“The Irei Project: A Buddhist-Inspired Monument to the WWII Japanese American Incarceration”
DESCRIPTION:Professor Williams will give a talk on “The Irei Project: A Buddhist-Inspired Monument to the WWII Japanese American Incarceration. In this talk\, Duncan Ryuken Williams will first describe the history of monument-building by Japanese American internees and incarcerees confined in America’s concentration camps during WWII. Created under the leadership of Buddhist priests at Manzanar and Rohwer\, the Ireito and Ireihi monuments – which still stand in the former camp cemeteries – were the most well-known memorials to the forced removal and injustice of incarceration. Williams will then speak about a contemporary national monument-building project that he directs called The Irei Project that is inspired by the wartime memorials. This event is open to all CSUN community members. \nDuncan Williams Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures\, USC \nPresented by the Department of Religious Studies and the Academic Programming Fund of the College of Humanities \nFor more information contact Prof. Kenneth Lee; klee@csun.edu. \n“The Irei Project: A Buddhist-Inspired Monument to the WWII Japanese American Incarceration” flyer (PDF)

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker Dr. José Carlos de la Puente Luna
DESCRIPTION:Translators and interpreters played a vital role in the colonial system\, acting as cultural mediators and agents of power. Through their work\, they helped build relationships between native Americans and Europeans in colonial America and thus\, needed to be knowledgeable about both cultures to accurately convey meaning. Taking all these facts into account\, Dr. De la Puente will discuss literary\, religious and administrative documents and engage in a dialogue with other disciplines that can provide a more nuanced view of the role of translation\, and of the mediators\, during the controversial encounter/clash between Europeans and Amerindians. He will also bring to the table how historians rely on translation and interpretation for their work. Finally\, De la Puente will share with the audience the challenges and achievements of a Spanish-speaking academic navigating a mostly English-speaking field. \nThis event will be held via Zoom. Registration is available HERE.
