SUMMARY:CSBS Dean's Discussion Series: Olympia LePoint\, award-winning rocket scientist\, author\, TED speaker and TV Journalist
DESCRIPTION:Stop AI Psychosis & AI Poisoning\, Policies for Human Safety in AI\nDate:  Thursday\, November 20\, 2025\nTime: 4:00 – 5:30 PMLocation: Whitsett Room | Sierra Hall 451\nSpeaker: Olympia LePoint\, award-winning rocket scientist\, author\, TED speaker and TV Journalist\nHosted by: CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences – Dean’s Discussion Series \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nDescription:\nIn the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence\, new threats are emerging that go beyond biased algorithms or mis-calibrated models. Join us for a compelling Dean’s Discussion with rocket scientist\, author\, and AI advocate Olympia LePoint as she illuminates the twin dangers of AI psychosis—the phenomenon of wildly unpredictable AI behaviour when human-facing systems go off script—and AI/data poisoning\, where malicious inputs or corrupted data warp or weaponize AI outputs. Drawing on her decades-long career launching rockets for NASA\, her bestselling “Answers Unleashed” educational platform\, and her deep interest in AI literacy and human-centred safeguards\, LePoint will map out policy and institutional strategies to protect communities\, educate future leaders\, and ensure AI serves rather than harms humanity. Whether you’re in social policy\, education\, health care\, technology or administration\, you’ll leave this talk with a sharper understanding of: \n\nwhy human safety must be built into AI from the ground up\,\nhow poisoning attacks work and what to watch for\,\nreal-world policy levers institutions can adopt today\, and\nhow individuals and teams can become smarter consumers\, designers or legislators of AI.\n\nA moderated Q&A will follow—bring your questions\, concerns and ideas. Together we’ll explore how policy\, practice and human values intersect in the age of increasingly autonomous systems. \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is committed to making our events accessible to everyone. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate\, please let us know. Note: If you require an ASL interpreter please contact us no later than end of business day on Wednesday\, November 12\, 2025. To request accommodations\, please contact Jacqueline Edwards  at 818-677-4035 or via email at jacqueline.edwards@csun.edu.

SUMMARY:CSUN China Institute Welcomes New Students with Warm Community Gathering
DESCRIPTION:On November 22\, 2025\, the China Institute at California State University\, Northridge (CSUN)\, successfully hosted its 2025 New Student Welcome Event\, bringing together faculty\, student advisors\, and newly enrolled Chinese students for an afternoon of connection\, support\, and celebration. \nInstitute Director Wei Cao\, Ph.D.\, along with several student advisors\, led the program\, which featured a relaxed luncheon\, Q&A sessions\, and lively faculty–student discussions on academic expectations\, campus resources\, and strategies for a successful first year. Dr. Cao emphasized the Institute’s long-standing commitment to building a supportive community\, saying\, “We warmly welcome all Chinese students and hope to encourage even more students to join our growing community.” \nFive first-year undergraduate and graduate students from various majors attended the event. Zhihao Xia\, a first-year master’s student in Business Analytics and current president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association\, shared\, “I learned a great deal from interacting with faculty and students across different academic fields\, which broadened my knowledge and expanded my perspective on future career development. My favorite part was the CSUN history trivia. It helped me learn more about the university’s remarkable past and outstanding alumni. It was my first time discovering that CSUN’s Journalism Department produced Linda Lingle\, who later became the governor of Hawaii.” \nThe event was generously sponsored by A&W BBQ Seafood Restaurant in Granada Hills. Student advisor Yue Zheng\, Ph.D.\, expressed appreciation for the support\, saying\, “We are profoundly grateful to have a local Chinese restaurant sponsor this event. Their food brings students the taste of home. Even if they cannot reunite with family during Thanksgiving\, enjoying familiar cuisine can help ease homesickness.” \nEstablished in 1982\, the CSUN China Institute is dedicated to fostering academic and cultural exchange between the United States and China. The Institute looks forward to hosting more programs that enrich student life and provide meaningful academic\, cultural\, and community support. \n

SUMMARY:CSUN Youth Symphony - Concert 1\, 1PM: Camerata and Symphony
DESCRIPTION:CSUN Youth Orchestra\nCamerata & Symphony\nSUNDAY NOVEMBER 23\, 2025 at 1:00 pm Plaza Del Sol\, $12 \n  \nPROGRAM TBA \nLEARN MORE ABOUT CSUN YOUTH ORCHESTRAS \nThe CSUN Youth Orchestras program is a vibrant multi-orchestra program for young musicians from San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas. Currently there are over 250 students enrolled in the program. The six ensembles meet on a weekly basis on Saturdays or Sundays. The groups are conducted by some of the finest music educators in Southern California. Auditions take place in early September and also in the late spring. \nThe Camerata Strings\nKimberly Blake-Kilgore\, Conductor\nSince 1991\, the Camerata Strings under the direction of Kimberly Blake-Kilgore\, has provided string musicians with the opportunity to participate in an outstanding and rewarding intermediate string orchestra program. The orchestra is composed of approximately 40 auditioned musicians from the San Fernando Valley\, Simi Valley\, Conejo Valley and surrounding communities. In this group we offer the opportunity for string musicians to learn the skills necessary for successful orchestral playing. Orchestral techniques are taught with special emphasis on the following: developing more advanced musicianship skills\, blending with others\, following the conductor\, bow technique\, dynamics\, learning to work with other musicians\, weekly practice techniques\, auditioning skills\, and learning to polish orchestral music as a cohesive ensemble ready for performance. The repertoire for Camerata Strings includes arranged and original classical symphonic works from various style periods ranging from Baroque to Contemporary\, as well as familiar themes from movie scores. \nKimberly Blake-Kilgore earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University\, Northridge\, where she studied violin performance with Kathleen Lenski. She has built a reputation as a renowned private teacher for young violinists since 1980. As the founder of the CSUNYO Camerata Strings\, Mrs. Kilgore has been conducting the ensemble since 1991. As a professional freelance violinist\, she has performed with numerous orchestras throughout the Los Angeles area\, including the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra. She was privileged to tour with conductor Kent Nagano throughout the Caribbean and the British Isles. In 1983\, Kimberly was a member of the International Philharmonic\, performing at the prestigious Edinburgh Music Festival in Scotland. She has toured throughout Europe\, Australia\, Mexico\, Australia\, and the Caribbean performing with her violin. Kimberly has enjoyed a diverse career in the LA studios which includes recording for TV\, motion pictures\, and various pop\, jazz and classical recording artists. As violin soloist\, she toured and recorded with R&B singer Teena Marie. She has performed and recorded with such greats as Jazz artist Ray Charles\, Placido Domingo\, Michael Bolton\, Laurie Anderson\, Rod Stewart\, Everette Harp\, and others. \nKimberly is highly motivated to provide opportunities for children to experience music. As a young violinist\, she had the opportunity to perform under several great conductors including Kent Nagano\, Yehudi Menuhin\, Calvin Simmons and Denis de Coteau. These conductors influenced her life and made a huge impact on her approach to teaching music. She has been successful in helping create a strong strings program in the elementary schools in Thousand Oaks where she lives with her husband studio percussionist Brian. \nThe Symphony\nThe Symphony is an intermediate orchestra of 70-90 members and plays both standard works and arrangements. Players are expected to have approximately four years or more of experience. Auditions take place through video auditions between July 1 and August 31 of each year. \nElizabeth Blake\, Conductor\nElizabeth Blake is a Pasadena native who began her violin studies at the age of three. She earned a Bachelor of Music Performance in violin from Northwestern University in 1989\, and moved to Tennessee\, where she served as Assistant Principal Second Violin in the Knoxville Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for seven years. During that time\, Ms. Blake appeared several times as the featured soloist with the Chamber Orchestra\, as well as in frequent performances for the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Music Series and on local radio broadcasts. \nIn 1997 Mrs. Blake returned to California\, where she pursued a freelance performance career. She has toured with Michael Crawford\, Yanni\, and other international artists\, and has performed as principal second violin for the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic\, the California Philharmonic\, the Santa Maria Philharmonic\, and the West Coast Chamber Orchestra\, as well as in the sections of the New West Symphony and other orchestras throughout the Los Angeles area. She can also be heard on soundtracks for Sony\, Warner Brothers and Castle Rock Entertainment. \nMs. Blake began her teaching career in 1981 at the age of 15\, giving private violin and viola instruction. While with the Knoxville Symphony\, she was an active member of the KSO Youth Education and Outreach Program\, bringing classical music into the Knox County public schools. In 2001 she founded the String program at Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks\, and in 2007 took over the Orchestra program at Westlake High School. Both schools have thriving orchestras\, and have received superior ratings at more than 75 festival appearances over the past twenty years. \n  \nSuggested Parking in Lot G4 \nTICKETS: $10 to $22
