SUMMARY:The Contemporary Importance of Asian American History: Bridging Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 26\, 2021 – 7:00pm to 8:30pm\nLocation: \nZoomCost: \nFree \nRegister for this event\nPresenter: Dr. Phillip Hutchison\, Department of Asian American Studies\, CSUN \nA Short Introduction: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”  I would like to share moments in Asian American history that help us understand the roots of the forever foreigner and model minority stereotypes\, especially as they continue to affect Asian Americans today.  History will remain the primary focus of the talk. \nA Short biography: Dr. Hutchison has been teaching in CSUN’s Asian American Studies department since 2003\, primarily teaching courses in Asian American legal and political history. Dr. Hutchison also teaches with the Educational Opportunity Program\, and first started working with them in various capacities in 1997 and have been teaching with their transitional programs since 2006. Dr. Hutchison received his B.A. in Asian American Studies and Chicano Studies from CSUN in 2000\, and his M.A. in Asian American studies from UCLA in 2002\, and his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from George Mason University in 2011. \nRecommended books for Asian American history: \n\nScott Kurashige\, The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japanese Americans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles.\nRobert G. Lee\, Orientals: Asian Americans in Popular Culture\nDaryl Maeda\, Chains of Babylon: The Rise of Asian America.\nHelen Heran Jun\, Race for Citizenship: Black Orientalism and Asian Uplift from Pre-Emancipation to Neoliberal America.\n\nThis event is sponsored by CSUN China Institute\, the University Library\, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, and the local community organization CHEER (https://www.sfvcheer.org/). It is free and open to the public. \n  \nLecture Recording\n \n\n\nA poem by one student co-panelist\, Amanda Zhou\nQun Zhong- Community \nIt’s qun as in the group of people marching the streets\, \ntheir footsteps trailing along miles\, shaking the ground\, \ncarrying hand written signs\, \ncrying for justice\, crying for peace\, \ncrying for the lives lost\, the lives taken by a single bullet \nshot by a hateful man. \nIt’s qun as in a delicately woven skirt\, \nelegantly designed to cover past the knee\, \nbut with a sophisticated slit amidst \nthe flowing silk red waves\, \nworn across the country during cultural festivals. \nNot as in the qun whose pattern was copied \nto be served as an exotic look for the foreigners\, \nto be styled as a 4-inch long skirt\, \nto be matched with chopsticks in the hair\, \nto be discarded without a second thought\, \nand without a single ounce of understanding. \nIt’s qun as in retreating from the spotlight\, fueling the model minority myth \nthe myth that groups millions of Asians under one title \nto choke the voice we have until it becomes hoarse \nand the words that finally croak out are unheard. \nThe myth that creates the narrative subconsciously built in society\, \ncommanding our oppression\, persuading us to just stay quiet. \nThe myth that turned us from the scapegoat in the 20th century \nfor the millions of crimes committed\, \nfor the countless jobs stolen\, \nfor the filth that swallowed the streets\, \nTo the scapegoat in the 21st century \nfor the millions of lives lost\, \nfor the countless shops closed\, \nfor the filth that flies through the air. \nIt’s zhong as in planting crops in the backyard facing scorching summer heat\, \nplowing each inch of soil individually over and over for the right texture \nto scatter the seeds around and carefully mark the locations of each \nto take the extra compost of leftover meals and grind them into a fine fertilizer \nto build handmade wooden racks for the crops to lean on \nto systematically sprinkle water over the baby sprouts\, waiting for it to grow. \nSo at last\, when the sprouts flourish into bundles of harvest\, \nthe cherished crops can be sent to neighbors and to friends \nas a gift of thanks \nand a token of love. \nIt’s zhong as in the full crowd on the night of Chinese New Year\, \nseated together in a theater\, \nwaiting for the gala performance to begin. \nThen seeing their daughter or grandchildren from far away\, \ngliding across the stage to a traditional Chinese folk song\, \nbringing pride to their grandmother’s face. \nPerformance after performance\, the audience \nstares in awe of the majestic piano performance\, \nerupts in laughter from the comedic dialogue\, \nand marvels at the wushu routines\, \nuntil finally\, the clock strikes 12 and everyone harmoniously cheers \n新年快乐\, happy New Year! \nAs the children race for red pocket money \nand bow towards their elders. \nQun zhong as in community\, \nthe community whose culture I share as a second generation immigrant\, \nthe culture that I proudly practice\, \nthe practices that are ridiculed among others. \nBut this community has been suffering and bleeding \nfrom name calling to violent hate crimes\, \nyet expected to be weak and submissive. \nBut this community has other limbs\, \nthe limbs that have been amputated from racial tensions- \nthe other minorities who have been discriminated against. \nBut the limbs can be reconnected once against\, \nsewn together\, suture after suture \nto restore the standing body to fight as one.
