SUMMARY:Bilingual Book Presentation/Presentación del libro: Sik'inik Chukojol Cholaj
DESCRIPTION:October 15\, 2024: In person at Whitsett Room & Online via ZOOM 2:00pm PST Indigenous Resistance Day 2024 In English and Spanish. \nThis virtual and in-person book presentation will host guest speakers Angel Poyón and Fernando Poyón\, both Maya Kaqchikel artists from Comalapa\, Guatemala\, and the Kaqjay Collective in Patzicia\, Guatemala that organized their exhibition titled Sik’inik Chukojol Cholaj (Voices within the fields). \nThe event will highlight the publication of their exhibition catalog\, a publication that is unprecedented because it is rare for an Indigenous collective to take on a curatorial role and because contemporary art is rarely installed surrounded by agricultural fields or for Indigenous communities to have access to the works. More importantly\, it makes visible the production of thought\, art\, and content from within contemporary Indigenous communities. \nSponsored by / Patrocinado por: Department of Central American and Transborder Studies; College of Humanities Academic Programing Fund; Central American Research and Policy Institute; & BHALAM Rhizomatic Community. \n

SUMMARY:LOOKOUT WEEKEND
DESCRIPTION:A Book Talk by Pablo Aguilar & Gerard Meraz \nLocation: The backyard party scene in Los Angeles during the 1980s was an integral part of the city’s vibrant youth culture and played a significant role in shaping the local music\, fashion\, and social scene. \n\n\n\nThese parties\, often referred to as “backyard boogies” or “house parties\,” \nwere informal gatherings held in residential neighborhoods\, usually in the backyards of private homes. \nThese fliers serve as time capsules\, transporting you back to a moment when the allure of the night was at its peak. From Backyards to Discotheques\, the DJ’s\, and promoters in LA thrived in the 1980’s. \nWe created a community that that should be acknowledged and recognized. \nThe Los Angeles promoters and DJ’s of this era are still going strong and continue to grow. \nFor questions about accessibility or to request accommodations\, please contact \nDr. Alicia Estrada at alicia.estrada@csun.edu by October 9\,2024 \nCo-Sponsored by Center for the Study of Peoples of the Américas (CESPA); Chicana/o Studies Department; \nCollege of Humanities Academic Programming Fund; Civil Discourse & Social Change (CDSC)
