DESCRIPTION:Brian Barany\, Classical Guitar\nOctober 19 at 7:30 pm Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall\, $10 – $22\nBrian Barany is a guitarist based out of the Los Angeles area\, where he divides his time between performing and music education. \nAs a performer\, Brian regularly holds concert appearances as a solo classical artist but he often plays in chamber music settings in collaboration with colleagues in various instruments and styles\, including classical\, jazz and pop music. He plays often in duo or quartet with classical guitar\, but can be seen playing with violin\, cello\, accordion or jazz combo. \nPresently\, Brian is the Chair of the Guitar Department at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music and also teaches various music curricula at Azusa Pacific University and Whittier College\, including classical and commercial/jazz guitar. As a teacher\, Brian is deeply passionate about teaching young musicians as well as college level performers. He is certified in Suzuki Guitar instruction and enjoys developing young musicians from beginning through advanced levels\, many of his students advancing to win local and international competitions. \nWhile earning his degrees (Doctorate: University of Southern California\, Masters: Azusa Pacific\, Bachelor’s: Cal State Northridge) Brian was a frequent competitor in classical guitar competitions.  His accolades include top prizes in The Randy Rhoades Scholarship Competition\, ASTA Solo Guitar Competition\, and Sierra Nevada Solo Guitar Competition\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Share this event. \nAbout this Event\nCalifornia State University\, Northridge (CSUN) will host a powerful panel discussion titled “Critical Race Theory\, Ethnic Studies\, and the Criminal Legal System: A Conversation on Justice with Black Public Defenders.” This event is designed to expose students and the wider community to critical issues related to mass incarceration\, criminal legal system reform\, and advocacy for Black communities and other groups disenfranchised by systemic inequities and state-sanctioned violence. \nThe panel will feature two distinguished Black public defenders from Los Angeles\, Ericka J. Wiley and George A. Turner\, Jr.\, who are recognized for their groundbreaking work in criminal defense and community justice advocacy. Their participation in this panel will center Black perspectives on the intersection of race\, justice\, and reform in the criminal legal system\, particularly within the context of national debates surrounding Critical Race Theory and Ethnic Studies. \nEvent Highlights\n\nEricka J. Wiley is a veteran public defender with more than 24 years of experience advocating for alternatives to incarceration. She has been a tireless advocate for expunging criminal records and educating youth about their rights\, actively engaging in programs like Parks After Dark in L.A. County. Ms. Wiley is a graduate of Fisk University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law\, and she currently serves as Vice President of the Los Angeles-Fisk University Alumni Association.\nGeorge A. Turner\, Jr.\, also a public defender and candidate for Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge\, has spent over 15 years defending the rights of the unhoused and other marginalized groups. A graduate of UCLA’s Critical Race Studies program\, Mr. Turner’s personal experiences growing up during California’s era of mass incarceration have fueled his passion for justice and reform. He currently leads the Homeless Mobile Unit at the Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Public Defender.\n\nThis event aims to inspire and inform students on how justice can shape their personal and professional journeys\, particularly in a political climate that demands active engagement in social and racial justice work. She has also participated in documentaries that reflect the worldview of the people of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec\, commercials and short films that celebrate gender diversity. She currently provides workshops with a gender focus\, while promoting the culture of both communities to which she belongs. She is queen of the authentic muxes based in Mexico City\, a distinction awarded for her social work. \n

DESCRIPTION:The urgency in education to engage readers at all levels and foster empathy and empowerment in our future citizens and leaders calls for a discussion about the importance of using diverse literature in our classrooms and  providing diverse books in our libraries. Join these four Southern California\, own voices authors as they discuss breaking patterns through literature by telling stories from their own neighborhoods. \nPlease RSVP at Breaking Patterns in Literature for Children and Young Adults \nFeaturing\nDr. Tisha Marie Reichle-Aguilera (Moderator)\nChicana Feminist and former Rodeo Queen\, Tisha Marie Reichle-Aguilera (she/her) writes so the desert landscape of her childhood can be heard as loudly as the urban chaos of her adulthood. She is obsessed with food. A former high school teacher\, she earned an MFA at Antioch University Los Angeles and a PhD from the University of Southern California. Her play Blind Thrust Fault was featured in Center Theater Group Writers’ Workshop Festival. Her flash fiction has been included in Best Small Fictions 2022. Her debut young adult novel\, Breaking Pattern\, is forthcoming with Inlandia Books. She is a Macondista and works for literary equity through Women Who Submit. You can read her other stories and essays at tishareichle.com. \nRyane Nicole Granados\nRyane Nicole Granados holds an MFA from Antioch University. She is a Los Angeles native whose writing finds its roots in her love of community and her belief that Black motherhood is an act of social justice. Named the 2021 California Arts Council Established Writer Individual Arts Fellow\, her work has been featured in various publications including Pangyrus\, The Manifest-Station\, The Nervous Breakdown\, The Atticus Review\, and LA Parent Magazine. Her storytelling has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and showcased in KPCC’s series Unheard LA. As the winner of the 2023 Leapfrog Press Global Fiction Prize\, her novella\, The Aves\, will be published in 2024. \nLivia Blackburne\nNew York Times bestselling author Livia Blackburne wrote her first novel while researching the neuroscience of reading at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Since then\, she’s switched to full-time writing\, which also involves getting into people’s heads but without the help of a three tesla MRI scanner.  Her books include Midnight Thief\, Rosemarked\, Feather and Flame\, and Clementine and Danny Save the World (And Each Other)\, as well as the picture book I Dream of Popo\, which received three starred reviews and was on numerous Best of Year lists. She is Chinese American and lives in southern California with her husband and daughter. \nIsabel Quintero\nIsabel Quintero is an award-winning writer\, including NPR’s yearly Book Concierge List\, NYPL’s best of list\, and the New York Times Best Books list. When she’s not writing she enjoys hiking\, laughing\, and cooking.-winning writer and the daughter of Mexican immigrants.
