SUMMARY:The Journey is the Destination: Recording Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:The Journey is the Destination presents a diverse and multigenerational group of artists who explore different parts of Los Angeles from a range of perspectives and media including: photography\, mixed-media pieces\, site-specific installations\, and sculpture. Their works offer new insights into many unrecognized and under-appreciated parts of Los Angeles\, which have been historically neglected based on racial\, class\, or cultural stereotypes. The exhibition seeks to challenge Western colonial ideas of mapping by placing the power to document and share the history of a place with the individuals who live there versus state-sanctioned agencies. The exhibition artists create living documents of their respective parts of Los Angeles\, offering alternative ways to think about and reimagine the city we all call home. \nImage: Marisela Norte\, Pasos Perdidos\, 2024. Android photo\, 9.5 x 9.5 inches. SUMMARY:The Warmth of the Sun: A Recent Survey of Tierra del Sol Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Warmth of the Sun showcases a range of works created by Tierra del Sol artists\, who work out of the foundation’s Sunland and Upland studios\, much of which depicts what it can feel like for anyone to be alive today in the Greater Los Angeles area. There is flora\, fauna\, and fast food; there are hot rods\, tchotchkes\, and a rabbi; there’s a chessboard\, a baseball stadium\, and a map of the entire region’s metropolitan bus and rail system. What makes Los Angeles – and the sprawl that spreads from its center – so special is the way that the natural world\, urban life\, people\, and myriad cultures are so enmeshed in unusual and unpredictable ways. What makes Tierra’s artists so special is the ways in which they capture the essence of this particular place with such poetry and precision. \nImage: Douglas Allen\, Wheelchairs Accepted\, 2022. SUMMARY:Zine-Making for Advocacy and Activism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get your message out\, and be seen with your zine! \nJoin the Library for a hands-on workshop exploring zine-making as a tool for advocacy and activism. Workshop participants will engage with the radical history of zines\, create their own\, and gain access to Know Your Rights information along with campus and community resources. \nThe workshop will focus on how to create zines for activism and advocacy. Register now and start brainstorming issues that you want to advocate for or inform your community about. Our Librarian zine-facilitators will guide you in developing your ideas\, gathering information\, and designing your self-published zine. But\, don’t worry if you don’t have a topic for this theme – ALL zine ideas and interests are welcome! \nCome\, create\, connect\, and enjoy light snacks while you zine! \nThis event is part of the Library’s Celebrando Cultura activities happening September 15 through October 15. Visit the Library’s Latinx/a/o/e Heritage Month Book Display in the lobby for books and literature that celebrate and elevate the Latinx diaspora. \nWhat is a Zine?\nA zine is a small handmade book or magazine that can be self-published and shared. People make zines for many different reasons: to spread the word about an event or political movement\, share information\, start community discussions\, or even to share art. Since the 1930s\, zines have sparked fandoms and been vital to punk and underground scenes\, feminist and queer movements\, and activist networks. They are a radical and countercultural means of self-expression and information-sharing that exist outside of mainstream publishing channels. \nZines are about DIY (do-it-yourself) creativity\, sharing ideas\, and building community. Zines can be printed in small batches on just a few pages and are often small enough to fit in a pocket. There are many styles of zines\, from folded paper to digitally published! All zines are meant to be shared\, copied and passed around. What kind of zine will you create? \nPlease RSVP on our event page.
