SUMMARY:Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:September 3 – December 5\, 2024\nReception: September 12 from 5:00pm-7:30pm\n \nBefore You Now focuses on the enduring theme of the artist’s self-portrait\, as seen in a selection of works from LACMA’s collections of photographs\, prints\, drawings\, videos\, and installation art. Primarily featuring contemporary makers\, the exhibition is an introduction to seeing American artists as they see themselves—or as they want to be seen by their public. They are shown contemplating their physicality in realistic fashion\, highlighting their persona through symbolic tropes\, or utilizing humor or conceptual methods to enlighten\, exaggerate\, or camouflage their reflective selves. SUMMARY:Love and (R)evolution: A Conversation with Artist and Activist Lydia Emily
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with artist and activist Lydia Emily as part of the Remnants of Resistance podcast series. Considered by many to be one of the preeminent female street artists of our time\, her large-scale murals have appeared all over the world. Her art is deeply political\, and our conversation will explore the relationship between art and politics alongside intersectional identities and resistance\, the focus of much of her work. Her mural on Skid Row honoring a survivor of sex trafficking is the longest-standing untouched and untagged mural in Los Angeles\, a deep sign of respect in the street art community. \nLydia Emily is a spokesperson for the MS Society and is the subject of the documentary The Art of Rebellion. Her memoir\, The Art of Hope\, was published in 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate and honor the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos with the DREAM Center! During the first part of the week\, you can create a personalized picture frame tribute to your loved ones who have passed. On Thursday\, Oct. 31\, you can display your frame on our communal altar to honor and remember those we have lost at our official celebration of Día de los Muertos. Food and drinks will be provided. Only 60 frames are available\, so reserve your spot now! Let’s create a meaningful space of connection and remembrance together!  \nRSVP to reserve your spot. \nDo you need interpretation for an event? If so\, please fill out the Interpreting Services Request Form at least seven business days prior to the event.
