SUMMARY:Randy Newman's FAUST: The Concert | Music and Lyrics by Randy Newman
DESCRIPTION:Good and evil battle it out in an American retelling of the classic story. Randy Newman’s only musical features the songwriter’s unmatched wit and some of his greatest songs. Thirty years since Newman’s album debuted\, the rock\, Gospel\, pop\, and Broadway-inspired tunes are as timely and catchy as ever. Following in the footsteps of James Taylor\, Linda Ronstadt\, Elton John\, and Bonnie Raitt\, this Soraya-produced original concert will feature an all-star cast of fresh talent led by two Broadway phenoms – Reeve Carney (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful and Hadestown) as the Devil and Javier Muñoz (In the Heights and Hamilton) as The Lord.

Marina comes to us from Biarritz\, France\, and has been based in Los Angeles since 2017. \n  \nThe evening will feature two distinct sides of Marina Pacowski’s musical persona: award-winning concert pianist and internationally acclaimed improvising jazz vocalist. The pianistic side will feature pieces from Schumann\, Schubert\, and Debussy\, while the vocal side will feature music from Miles Davis\, Charlie Parker\, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Carl Saunders\, among others.  With special guest jazz pianist Jeff Colella\, this promises to be a varied and exciting musical journey.  \n  \nMarina Pacowski was born in Biarritz\, France\, where she began her musical journey as a classical pianist. There was always jazz in the house as well\, as her father played saxophone and clarinet and her brother is a professional jazz guitarist. \nMarina’s latest CD “Inner Urge” (on Summit Records) received rave reviews and widespread radio play across the globe\, and features such jazz luminaries as Roy McCurdy\, John Clayton\, Peter Erskine\, Josh Nelson\, Larry Koonse\, and the late great Carl Saunders (in his last recorded solo). \n  \nJeff Colella is a highly sought after jazz pianist whose credits include Lou Rawls\, Jack Jones\, and many others. \nGET TICKETS\nSuggested Parking via Kiosks in Lot B1 \nTICKETS: $10 to $22

SUMMARY:The Sandwich Space: Using Statistical Breakdowns to Explore Semantic Categories
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Linguistics/TESL Presents\nSarah MacDugall Ph.D. Student\, University at Buffalo\nBackground: The question of whether a hotdog is a sandwich has been asked around dinner tables with friends\, at water coolers with coworkers\, and in an interview between Stephen Colbert and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Despite the cult popularity of this question\, very little quantitative work has been done to address it. \nThis project explores how certain words or concepts fit into the broader category of  “sandwich\,” how they relate to each other within that category\, and how the space might differ across various language communities. It also considers how fuzzy categories might be approached when they have real world legal implications. This unresolved line of questioning offers several possibilities for future work in linguistic\, computational\, and cognitive domains. \nRegister to join via Zoom\nThe Sandwich Space: Using Statistical Breakdowns to Explore Semantic Categories\, event flyer (PDF)
