The concert will feature the talented CSUN Latin Jazz Ensemble performing an variety of energetic and brilliant Latin jazz compositions\, including classics like “Mambo Inn” by the great Tito Puente and progressive works by Vince Mendoza\, Michel Camillo\, and Luciana Souza. Expect a lively\, upbeat performance with compositions that celebrate the rhythms\, melodies\, and spirit of Latin American music. \nThe CSUN Latin Jazz Ensemble is known for its vibrant performances and unique interpretations of classic and modern Latin jazz compositions. Led by Dr. Michael Gutierrez\, the ensemble blends a wide array of rhythms and song forms from across Latin America\, bringing the audience on a musical journey from the lively streets of Cuba to the warm beaches of Brazil. Each piece in the program represents a different aspect of Latin jazz\, showcasing both the complexity and the infectious energy of this beloved genre. \nVocal jazz is a genre of jazz where the voice is used as an instrument\, featuring techniques like improvisation\, scat singing\, and phrasing similar to instrumental jazz\, often with a focus on swing\, rhythm\, and interaction with the band.  The CSUN Vocal Jazz Ensemble\, directed by Grammy-winner Erin Bentlage\, will present a collection of diverse works including standard vocal jazz repertoire as well as student compositions/arrangements. They mark a profound turning point\, anticipating the expressive intimacy of the Romantic character piece later perfected by composers like Chopin\, Schubert\, and Schumann. \nThe program continues with a selection of Chopin Etudes — masterpieces that seamlessly blend virtuosic brilliance with poetic depth\, elevating technical studies into concert hall staples. \nWe then turn to early 20th-century Russia\, exploring the contrasting worlds of Alexander Scriabin and Sergei Rachmaninoff — classmates\, rivals\, and two of the most influential voices of their time. DESCRIPTION:CSUN Music Faculty Artist Recital\nErica Lazerow Davis\, soprano & Kathryn Pisaro\, oboe\nSeptember 20th\, 2025 at 7:30 pm Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall\, $10 – $22 \n  \nThis program features music for voice and oboe performed by Dr. Kathryn Pisaro\, oboe\, and Erica Lazerow Davis\, soprano. \nCSUN faculty members Erica Lazerow Davis\, soprano\, and Kathryn Pisaro\, oboe\, are performing a combined recital that features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #2 and the famous Bell Song from Delibes’ Lakme. Also included are several world premieres and an improvisation for oboe and electric guitar.\nJoining Erica Davis and Kathryn Pisaro are Erick Jovel on trumpet\, Niv Ashkanazy on violin\, Sarah Wass on flute\, Timothy Howard on continuo\, Yoko Mizuno on piano\, Mike Fink\, guitar\, and an alumni ensemble of string players led by Alisa Luera\, Alizah Chao\, Luigi Ito\, and Benz Marston.  The recital features world premieres by Meredith Brammeier\, Alex Bozman\, Christin Hablewitz\, John Pisaro\, and Russell Steinberg.\nSoprano Erica Lazerow Davis joined the CSUN faculty in 2012. With a voice the LA Times called “opulent\,” Ms. Davis is known for her beautiful high notes and sparkling interpretations.  She has sung with the Independent Opera Company\, Mesopotamian Opera\, Vineyard Touring Opera\, and LA Metropolitan Opera. Her concert performances have included Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater\, Handel’s Messiah\, Bach’s Cantata 80\, and Britten’s The Company of Heaven.  An avid recital singer\, she has performed numerous recitals at CSUN and throughout Los Angeles. Ms. Davis is a founding member of the chamber ensemble Convivia\, and she is featured on its CD O sacrum convivium. \nKathryn Gleasman Pisaro\, is active as an oboist and a music historian. As an oboist\, she has performed with hundreds of artists and ensembles\, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Andrea Bocelli\, Luciano Pavarotti\, the Moody Blues\, Ray Charles\, Garth Brooks\, and has performed for presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush.  She has played in several touring Broadway productions\, including Phantom of the Opera\, Cabaret\, and Les Misérables.  She has made recordings of solo contemporary music for oboe\, recorded with jazz ensembles in Chicago and LA\, and is on two albums with the rock band Poi Dog Pondering\, Pomegranate and Great White Light. She has toured Europe six times as a new music soloist. As a music historian\, she received her master’s and PhD degrees in musicology at Northwestern University\, with a dissertation on experimental music in Britain in the 1960s.  She regularly presents papers at national and international conferences and has written entries for such prestigious publications as the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and New Dictionary of the History of Ideas.  She is currently on the faculty at California Institute of the Arts and California State University\, Northridge. \nSuggested Parking via Kiosks in Lot B1\nTICKETS: $10 to $22\nCan’t attend in Person? Now entering its 17th season\, this ground-breaking ensemble continues to celebrate the rich diversity of our world through bold\, imaginative\, and compelling musical storytelling. \nTEMPO presents an annual Call for Scores\, showcasing new voices alongside established contemporary works. Highlights of the 2025–2026 season include a special celebration of co-founder Dan Kessner’s 80th birthday and for this event\, performances of works by emerging composers Xinyuan Deng\, Jeffrey Gao\, Ellen Ruth Harrison\, and Wenbyn Lyu. DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist Recital – Alexander Agate\, piano\nMonday October 13th 2025 at 7:30 pm \nShigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall\, $10 – $22 \nAlexander Agate is launching our CSUN Piano Alumni Series with this recital. A recent Grand Prize winner of the 2025 Thomas F. Hulbert International Piano Competition at the University of Maryland (https://www.hulbertinstitute.org/2025-competition#sZhDzp)\, he is performing an exciting virtuoso program\, exploring the grand romantic style of two composers whose music has been awaiting their due revival: the French composer Florent Schmitt (1870-1958) whose music has been praised for the “union of French clarity and German strength\,” and the Polish pianist and composer Moriz Rosenthal (1862-1946)\, one of last illustrious pupils of Franz Liszt\, a brilliant virtuoso of the Golden Age of piano\, whose music is being rediscovered today.  Dr. Agate is at the forefront of this movement as he has been commissioned to make his debut recording album of the music by this composer as part of the prize from the 2024 Sicily International Piano Festival & Competition. The recording\, commissioned by the Italian Dynamic record label is to take place this November. Known for their versatility and engaging performances\, Stoll and Wright bring together their extensive solo\, chamber\, and collaborative experience—ranging from major international stages to innovative local programs. Both active educators and acclaimed performers\, they offer a unique musical experience that bridges classical elegance with contemporary flair. \n  \nBIOGRAPHIES \nDr. Micah Wright is a versatile artist\, performer\, and educator based in Southern California. Dr. Wright has received several national and international musical awards and given solo\, chamber\, and orchestral performances throughout the United States. He is the winner of the 2016 Frances Walton Competition\, 2nd prize winner in the 2017 Backun International Clarinet Competition\, and a finalist in the International Clarinet Association’s Young Artist Competition\, Chamber Music Northwest International Young Artist Competition\, and William C. Byrd International Young Artist Competition. Known for his unique programming\, Dr. Wright frequently performs his own arrangements\, has premiered many contemporary works\, is comfortable performing in a wide variety of genres and instruments\, and is an active member of several active chamber ensembles. In 2018 and 2023\, he was featured as a soloist by the Beverly Hills National Auditions\, performing on both clarinet and piano. Dr. Wright maintains a diverse teaching schedule and is on faculty at California Lutheran University\, Citrus College\, Pierce College\, Pasadena Conservatory\, Kadima Conservatory\, and California State Summer School for the Arts. He graduated with academic honors from USC Thornton (D.M.A.\, 2015)\, Rice University’s Shepherd School (M.M. 2012)\, and Drake University (B.M. 2009) where he studied clarinet with Michele Zukovsky\, Yehuda Gilad\, Richie Hawley\, Dr. Michael Webster\, and Clarence Padilla \nSouthern Californian pianist\, Jason Stoll\, enjoys a multifaceted career as concerto soloist\, recitalist\, chamber musician\, educator\, and collaborative artist. Past concert highlights include giving the U.S. premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Rondo Concertante for piano and strings\, a number of solo recitals and chamber music throughout his native California\, nationally\, and internationally\, and numerous orchestral appearances incuding the Santa Monica Symphony\, North Charleston Pops\, Miami Music Festival Orchestra\, and the Midland-Odessa Symphony  just to name a few. \nMr. Stoll holds degrees from California State University\, Northridge\, the Juilliard School\, and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Blake Cooper\, tuba\nSaturday October 26th\, 2025 at 3:00 pm Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall\, Free Admission \nDr. P Blake Cooper will be presenting a faculty recital for CSUN OcTubaFest 2025.  Joining Dr. Cooper for will this performance: Katie Eames on Piano and CSUN’s own Dillon MacIntyre on Trombone.\nDr. Cooper is an accomplished LA recording artist for Film\, TV\, video games and record dates. He serves as Principal Tuba with the New West Symphony and is a regular substitute musician with orchestras such as the LA Phil\, LA Opera\, San Diego Symphony\, and many more. This years OcTubaFest faculty recital will feature works by Szentpali\, Redden\, Koetsier\, Meador\, Nickens and Nishimura.\n\nThis event will be followed by a Tuba Student Studio Recital\, Monday Oct 27th at 7:30 PM\, also in Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall.\nSuggested Parking via Kiosks in Lot B1 \nThis is event is FREE. \nThis is event is not live streamed.
