SUMMARY:Why do we have rituals? Guest Speaker\, Dimitris Xygalatas
DESCRIPTION:A word from the special guest speaker: From weddings to college graduations and from prayers to painful fire-walking ceremonies\, ritual is everywhere. At first glance\, such activities might seem pointless. So why do we all engage in them? Anthropologists have long proposed that rituals persist because they convey certain benefits to their practitioners and their communities. But how can we study these ostensible benefits\, given the contextually sensitive nature of cultural practices? In this talk\, I will present an interdisciplinary research program that combines laboratory and field methods to explore the puzzle of ritual in real-life settings\, from some of the most mundane to some of the most extraordinary rituals in the world. DESCRIPTION:Share this event. \nAbout this Event\nCalifornia State University\, Northridge (CSUN) will host a powerful panel discussion titled “Critical Race Theory\, Ethnic Studies\, and the Criminal Legal System: A Conversation on Justice with Black Public Defenders.” This event is designed to expose students and the wider community to critical issues related to mass incarceration\, criminal legal system reform\, and advocacy for Black communities and other groups disenfranchised by systemic inequities and state-sanctioned violence. \nThe panel will feature two distinguished Black public defenders from Los Angeles\, Ericka J. Wiley and George A. Turner\, Jr.\, who are recognized for their groundbreaking work in criminal defense and community justice advocacy. Their participation in this panel will center Black perspectives on the intersection of race\, justice\, and reform in the criminal legal system\, particularly within the context of national debates surrounding Critical Race Theory and Ethnic Studies. \nEvent Highlights\n\nEricka J. Wiley is a veteran public defender with more than 24 years of experience advocating for alternatives to incarceration. She has been a tireless advocate for expunging criminal records and educating youth about their rights\, actively engaging in programs like Parks After Dark in L.A. County. Ms. Wiley is a graduate of Fisk University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law\, and she currently serves as Vice President of the Los Angeles-Fisk University Alumni Association.\nGeorge A. Turner\, Jr.\, also a public defender and candidate for Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge\, has spent over 15 years defending the rights of the unhoused and other marginalized groups. A graduate of UCLA’s Critical Race Studies program\, Mr. Turner’s personal experiences growing up during California’s era of mass incarceration have fueled his passion for justice and reform. He currently leads the Homeless Mobile Unit at the Law Offices of the Los Angeles County Public Defender.\n\nThis event aims to inspire and inform students on how justice can shape their personal and professional journeys\, particularly in a political climate that demands active engagement in social and racial justice work. DESCRIPTION:Rhythms of Latin America\nA Lecture/Recital with Dr. Andrés Jaramillo\nOctober 11 at 7:30 pm\, Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall \nNo Admission Fee \nCo-sponsored by Piano Spheres and The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs \n \n  \nRhythms of Latin America by Dr. Andrés Jaramillo is a lecture recital on Latin American music\, exploring rhythms\, styles\, and new compositions by LatinX composers\, including movements of pieces by composers Paola Marquez and Jorge Alejandro Salazar that will be premiered at Dr. Jaramillo’s Piano Spheres recital on January 21\, 2025 at Thayer Hall\, Colburn School. Dr. Jaramillo will also perform other works by Latino composers from the 19th and 20th centuries. \nDr. Andrés Jaramillo serves as faculty at the Collinsworth School of Music at California Baptist University where he teaches Applied Piano\, Chamber Music\, Music Theory\, Senior Recital Class\, Musicianship\, and Music in Global Cultures.  Aside from teaching\, Dr. Jaramillo keeps an exciting and active career as a solo and collaborative pianist\, clinician and conductor. He has performed internationally in such countries as South America\, South Africa\, Spain\, and China as well as throughout the United States. His programs typically feature standard classical piano repertory combined with Contemporary and Latin-American music. He often premieres international and local composers’ works. Dr. Jaramillo earned his DMA degree in Piano Performance with minor fields in Theory\, Instrumental Conducting\, and Keyboard Collaborative Arts from USC Thornton School of Music under the mentorship of prestigious pianist and teachers\, Daniel Pollack\, Dr. Alan Smith and Prof. Larry Livingstone. He obtained his Master’s Degree from the EWU and his undergrad studies at the Juan N.
