SUMMARY:Manuel Vargas\, Professor\, Department of Philosophy\, UCSD
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Bio: Manuel Vargas is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of California San Diego. One facet of his research focuses on the overlap of moral and psychological issues concerning human agency and freedom. A second facet concerns the history of philosophy in Mexico\, and a third focuses on issues in contemporary Latina/o/x/e philosophy. Vargas is the author of the forthcoming Mexican Philosophy (OUP)\, which showcases notable episodes in the history of philosophy in Mexico. He is also the author of Building Better Beings: A Theory of Moral Responsibility (OUP\, 2013)\, which won the American Philosophical Association’s Book Prize in 2015. From 2019-2021\, Vargas and Santiago Amaya (U. de los Andes)\, co-directed a $1.2 million project funded by the John Templeton Foundation to foster philosophical work on free will\, agency\, and responsibility in Latin America. With Clinton Tolley (UC San Diego)\, he directs the Mexican Philosophy Lab at UC San Diego. http://vargasphilosophy.com/ \n  \nAbstract: A variety of philosophers and social theorists have thought that Latinxs don’t fit the usual identity categories in the United States. The category doesn’t seem like a racial category\, because its members can be members of any racial group. It also doesn’t seem especially promising as an ethnic category\, because it is unclear that there is sufficient cultural overlap amongst its members to constitute an ethnic group. Various other proposals—ethnorace\, historical families\, affordances\, and so on—all seem to face their own problems. There is a way to sidestep many of the familiar challenges to the category\, but it comes at the cost of doing both more and less than we might hope for a social identity category. Even so\, this shows us something important about the limits and significance of such categories.

SUMMARY:Staying Human in the Age of AI: CSBS Open Discussion Series
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2026 Open Discussion Series: Staying Human in the Age of AI\nWhen and Where\nThursdays | 12:00–1:30 PM \n\nApril 2  (In Person)\nApril 16 (via Zoom)\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nMeeting ID: 898 5500 6864\nPasscode: 312758\nMay 7 (In Person)\n\nWhitsett Room | Sierra Hall\, Room 451 \nOverview\nThis spring\, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS) continues its college-wide exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Extended Reality (VXR) in education and social services. Supported by Dean Searcy and led by Dr. Ellie Kazemi (Department of Psychology)\, this series creates an open space for thoughtful\, critical conversation about how these technologies are shaping our classrooms\, disciplines\, and daily work. \nPurpose\nOur College is creating space for open dialogue about pressing concerns such as academic integrity\, erosion of learning\, bias\, labor\, sustainability\, and the preservation of academic values—alongside honest discussion about how AI is already influencing our professional and personal lives. Faculty and staff bring diverse perspectives\, from active integration to intentional limits. The goal is not consensus\, but shared understanding and meaningful exchange grounded in our shared academic values. \nWhy Consider Attending?\nNew tools\, headlines\, and workshops about AI seem to emerge daily. The rapid pace of change in the corporate world is spilling into higher education\, and many of us are being asked to respond quickly—sometimes without adequate space to think. \nThis gathering offers an opportunity to pause and reflect. To make sense of what’s happening alongside colleagues who may share your excitement\, your hesitation\, or both. Together\, we can support one another in navigating a fast-moving and uncertain moment\, and consider how to move forward in ways that align with our values and our students’ needs. \nJoin us as we examine possibilities\, address limitations\, and learn from one another’s approaches to teaching\, research\, and community work. \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is committed to making its events accessible to everyone. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate\, please let us know. Note: If you require an ASL interpreter\, please contact us no later than five working days prior to the event.
