DESCRIPTION:Rhythms of Latin America\nA Lecture/Recital with Dr. Andrés Jaramillo\nOctober 11 at 7:30 pm\, Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall \nNo Admission Fee \nCo-sponsored by Piano Spheres and The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs \n \n  \nRhythms of Latin America by Dr. Andrés Jaramillo is a lecture recital on Latin American music\, exploring rhythms\, styles\, and new compositions by LatinX composers\, including movements of pieces by composers Paola Marquez and Jorge Alejandro Salazar that will be premiered at Dr. Jaramillo’s Piano Spheres recital on January 21\, 2025 at Thayer Hall\, Colburn School. Dr. Jaramillo will also perform other works by Latino composers from the 19th and 20th centuries. \nDr. Andrés Jaramillo serves as faculty at the Collinsworth School of Music at California Baptist University where he teaches Applied Piano\, Chamber Music\, Music Theory\, Senior Recital Class\, Musicianship\, and Music in Global Cultures.  Aside from teaching\, Dr. Jaramillo keeps an exciting and active career as a solo and collaborative pianist\, clinician and conductor. He has performed internationally in such countries as South America\, South Africa\, Spain\, and China as well as throughout the United States. His programs typically feature standard classical piano repertory combined with Contemporary and Latin-American music. He often premieres international and local composers’ works. Dr. Jaramillo earned his DMA degree in Piano Performance with minor fields in Theory\, Instrumental Conducting\, and Keyboard Collaborative Arts from USC Thornton School of Music under the mentorship of prestigious pianist and teachers\, Daniel Pollack\, Dr. Alan Smith and Prof. Larry Livingstone. He obtained his Master’s Degree from the EWU and his undergrad studies at the Juan N. Corpas University under the mentorship of Maestro Jorge Zorro Sanchez and teachers Pilar Leyva and Ludmila Weber. \nPROGRAM \nToccata – Jorge Pinzón (1968) \nAncestro – German D. Salazar (1978) \n\nDanza\nCosta (Porro)\nPasillo\nAlabao\nJoropo\n\nPIANO SPHERES: is a 30 year-old nonprofit organization that supports the composition\, performance\, and production of major new works for the piano as well as rarely heard treasures from centuries past. They expand the piano repertoire by commissioning new music and sustaining several concert series of the highest artistic quality which focus primarily on music by living American composers. Their Leonard Stein Artist Residency is a performance and teaching program dedicated to locating\, supporting and presenting pianists from historically underrepresented groups who specialize in the performance of new music. SUMMARY:Love and (R)evolution: A Conversation with Artist and Activist Lydia Emily
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with artist and activist Lydia Emily as part of the Remnants of Resistance podcast series. Considered by many to be one of the preeminent female street artists of our time\, her large-scale murals have appeared all over the world. Her art is deeply political\, and our conversation will explore the relationship between art and politics alongside intersectional identities and resistance\, the focus of much of her work. Her mural on Skid Row honoring a survivor of sex trafficking is the longest-standing untouched and untagged mural in Los Angeles\, a deep sign of respect in the street art community. \nLydia Emily is a spokesperson for the MS Society and is the subject of the documentary The Art of Rebellion. Her memoir\, The Art of Hope\, was published in 2024.
