SUMMARY:Zine-Making for Advocacy and Activism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get your message out\, and be seen with your zine! \nJoin the Library for a hands-on workshop exploring zine-making as a tool for advocacy and activism. Workshop participants will engage with the radical history of zines\, create their own\, and gain access to Know Your Rights information along with campus and community resources. \nThe workshop will focus on how to create zines for activism and advocacy. Register now and start brainstorming issues that you want to advocate for or inform your community about. Our Librarian zine-facilitators will guide you in developing your ideas\, gathering information\, and designing your self-published zine. But\, don’t worry if you don’t have a topic for this theme – ALL zine ideas and interests are welcome! \nCome\, create\, connect\, and enjoy light snacks while you zine! \nThis event is part of the Library’s Celebrando Cultura activities happening September 15 through October 15. Visit the Library’s Latinx/a/o/e Heritage Month Book Display in the lobby for books and literature that celebrate and elevate the Latinx diaspora. \nWhat is a Zine?\nA zine is a small handmade book or magazine that can be self-published and shared. People make zines for many different reasons: to spread the word about an event or political movement\, share information\, start community discussions\, or even to share art. Since the 1930s\, zines have sparked fandoms and been vital to punk and underground scenes\, feminist and queer movements\, and activist networks. They are a radical and countercultural means of self-expression and information-sharing that exist outside of mainstream publishing channels. \nZines are about DIY (do-it-yourself) creativity\, sharing ideas\, and building community. Zines can be printed in small batches on just a few pages and are often small enough to fit in a pocket. There are many styles of zines\, from folded paper to digitally published! All zines are meant to be shared\, copied and passed around. What kind of zine will you create? \nPlease RSVP on our event page.

SUMMARY:Climate Change Impacts on Power Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Event Description\n\nRSVP for this Event \n\nHow resilient is our power infrastructure in the face of a changing climate? Across North America\, extreme weather events\, heatwaves\, and wildfires are increasingly stressing electrical grids\, raising urgent questions about how to adapt energy systems for the future. \nJoin us for a special talk by Dr. Pierre-Olivier Pineau\, Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at HEC Montréal and Chair in Energy Sector Management. Dr. Pineau will present findings from a major research project funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ)\, which examines the economic and operational impacts of climate change on energy infrastructure—including transmission and distribution networks\, transformers\, and other critical assets. He will share his team’s modelling approach\, preliminary results\, and the broader implications for managing and adapting power systems. \nWith wildfires in California and beyond already exposing vulnerabilities in existing grids\, this research offers timely insights for both local and global energy resilience. \nDate: October 29\, 2025\nTime: 11:30AM – 1:00PM\nLocation: Whitsett Room | Sierra Hall\, Room 451 \nLight refreshments will be served. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Pineau (PhD\, HEC Montréal\, 2000) is an internationally recognized expert in energy policy and management\, with a particular focus on electricity sector reforms and sustainability. He has published extensively on energy systems and sustainable development\, contributes regularly to public policy debates\, and is the author of numerous government reports. His latest book\, The Energy Balance (in French)\, was released in February 2023. Dr. Pineau is also a Fellow at the Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis of Organizations (CIRANO). \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is committed to making our events accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:Rooted in Resilience: Native Plants and Fire-Smart Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 13 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. | CSUN G.A.R.D.E.N. \nRSVP Here! \nNative Plants and Wildfire Resilience in the G.A.R.D.E.N.: Talk with Scott Murray\nJoin the CSUN Institute for Sustainability for a hands-on garden talk with Scott Murray of Edge of Urban Farm as we dig into how native plants can help create more fire-smart\, climate-ready landscapes. \nNative plants are more than just beautiful—they’re built for resilience. With deep root systems\, natural moisture retention\, and adaptation to Southern California’s fire cycles\, native species help slow fire spread\, reduce maintenance\, and support biodiversity. By rethinking what we plant\, we can make our gardens both safer and more sustainable. \nScott Murray\, founder of Edge of Urban Farm\, brings over 40 years of experience in organic and regenerative agriculture across California and Mexico. His work focuses on transforming urban and community spaces into productive\, sustainable ecosystems. \nCome ready to get your hands in the soil\, learn practical strategies for wildfire resilience\, and leave inspired to grow change—one native plant at a time. \nRSVP Here! \nEvent Accessibility\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Institute for Sustainability are committed to making our events accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:CSBS Dean's Discussion Series: Olympia LePoint\, award-winning rocket scientist\, author\, TED speaker and TV Journalist
DESCRIPTION:Stop AI Psychosis & AI Poisoning\, Policies for Human Safety in AI\nDate:  Thursday\, November 20\, 2025\nTime: 4:00 – 5:30 PMLocation: Whitsett Room | Sierra Hall 451\nSpeaker: Olympia LePoint\, award-winning rocket scientist\, author\, TED speaker and TV Journalist\nHosted by: CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences – Dean’s Discussion Series \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nDescription:\nIn the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence\, new threats are emerging that go beyond biased algorithms or mis-calibrated models. Join us for a compelling Dean’s Discussion with rocket scientist\, author\, and AI advocate Olympia LePoint as she illuminates the twin dangers of AI psychosis—the phenomenon of wildly unpredictable AI behaviour when human-facing systems go off script—and AI/data poisoning\, where malicious inputs or corrupted data warp or weaponize AI outputs. Drawing on her decades-long career launching rockets for NASA\, her bestselling “Answers Unleashed” educational platform\, and her deep interest in AI literacy and human-centred safeguards\, LePoint will map out policy and institutional strategies to protect communities\, educate future leaders\, and ensure AI serves rather than harms humanity. Whether you’re in social policy\, education\, health care\, technology or administration\, you’ll leave this talk with a sharper understanding of: \n\nwhy human safety must be built into AI from the ground up\,\nhow poisoning attacks work and what to watch for\,\nreal-world policy levers institutions can adopt today\, and\nhow individuals and teams can become smarter consumers\, designers or legislators of AI.\n\nA moderated Q&A will follow—bring your questions\, concerns and ideas. Together we’ll explore how policy\, practice and human values intersect in the age of increasingly autonomous systems. \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is committed to making our events accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:CSUN Youth Symphony - Concert 1\, 1PM: Camerata and Symphony
DESCRIPTION:CSUN Youth Orchestra\nCamerata & Symphony\nSUNDAY NOVEMBER 23\, 2025 at 1:00 pm Plaza Del Sol\, $12 \n  \nPROGRAM TBA \nLEARN MORE ABOUT CSUN YOUTH ORCHESTRAS \nThe CSUN Youth Orchestras program is a vibrant multi-orchestra program for young musicians from San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas. Currently there are over 250 students enrolled in the program. The six ensembles meet on a weekly basis on Saturdays or Sundays. The groups are conducted by some of the finest music educators in Southern California. Auditions take place in early September and also in the late spring. \nThe Camerata Strings\nKimberly Blake-Kilgore\, Conductor\nSince 1991\, the Camerata Strings under the direction of Kimberly Blake-Kilgore\, has provided string musicians with the opportunity to participate in an outstanding and rewarding intermediate string orchestra program. The orchestra is composed of approximately 40 auditioned musicians from the San Fernando Valley\, Simi Valley\, Conejo Valley and surrounding communities. In this group we offer the opportunity for string musicians to learn the skills necessary for successful orchestral playing. Orchestral techniques are taught with special emphasis on the following: developing more advanced musicianship skills\, blending with others\, following the conductor\, bow technique\, dynamics\, learning to work with other musicians\, weekly practice techniques\, auditioning skills\, and learning to polish orchestral music as a cohesive ensemble ready for performance. The repertoire for Camerata Strings includes arranged and original classical symphonic works from various style periods ranging from Baroque to Contemporary\, as well as familiar themes from movie scores. \nKimberly Blake-Kilgore earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University\, Northridge\, where she studied violin performance with Kathleen Lenski. She has built a reputation as a renowned private teacher for young violinists since 1980. As the founder of the CSUNYO Camerata Strings\, Mrs. Kilgore has been conducting the ensemble since 1991. As a professional freelance violinist\, she has performed with numerous orchestras throughout the Los Angeles area\, including the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra. She was privileged to tour with conductor Kent Nagano throughout the Caribbean and the British Isles. In 1983\, Kimberly was a member of the International Philharmonic\, performing at the prestigious Edinburgh Music Festival in Scotland. She has toured throughout Europe\, Australia\, Mexico\, Australia\, and the Caribbean performing with her violin. Kimberly has enjoyed a diverse career in the LA studios which includes recording for TV\, motion pictures\, and various pop\, jazz and classical recording artists. As violin soloist\, she toured and recorded with R&B singer Teena Marie. She has performed and recorded with such greats as Jazz artist Ray Charles\, Placido Domingo\, Michael Bolton\, Laurie Anderson\, Rod Stewart\, Everette Harp\, and others. \nKimberly is highly motivated to provide opportunities for children to experience music. As a young violinist\, she had the opportunity to perform under several great conductors including Kent Nagano\, Yehudi Menuhin\, Calvin Simmons and Denis de Coteau. These conductors influenced her life and made a huge impact on her approach to teaching music. She has been successful in helping create a strong strings program in the elementary schools in Thousand Oaks where she lives with her husband studio percussionist Brian. \nThe Symphony\nThe Symphony is an intermediate orchestra of 70-90 members and plays both standard works and arrangements. Players are expected to have approximately four years or more of experience. Auditions take place through video auditions between July 1 and August 31 of each year. \nElizabeth Blake\, Conductor\nElizabeth Blake is a Pasadena native who began her violin studies at the age of three. She earned a Bachelor of Music Performance in violin from Northwestern University in 1989\, and moved to Tennessee\, where she served as Assistant Principal Second Violin in the Knoxville Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for seven years. During that time\, Ms. Blake appeared several times as the featured soloist with the Chamber Orchestra\, as well as in frequent performances for the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Music Series and on local radio broadcasts. \nIn 1997 Mrs. Blake returned to California\, where she pursued a freelance performance career. She has toured with Michael Crawford\, Yanni\, and other international artists\, and has performed as principal second violin for the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic\, the California Philharmonic\, the Santa Maria Philharmonic\, and the West Coast Chamber Orchestra\, as well as in the sections of the New West Symphony and other orchestras throughout the Los Angeles area. She can also be heard on soundtracks for Sony\, Warner Brothers and Castle Rock Entertainment. \nMs. Blake began her teaching career in 1981 at the age of 15\, giving private violin and viola instruction. While with the Knoxville Symphony\, she was an active member of the KSO Youth Education and Outreach Program\, bringing classical music into the Knox County public schools. In 2001 she founded the String program at Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks\, and in 2007 took over the Orchestra program at Westlake High School. Both schools have thriving orchestras\, and have received superior ratings at more than 75 festival appearances over the past twenty years. \n  \nSuggested Parking in Lot G4 \nTICKETS: $10 to $22

SUMMARY:CSUN Orange Grove Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:As part of Matador’s Day of Service\nSaturday\, February 7 | 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. \nJoin the CSUN Institute for Sustainability and Food Forward for a morning of service\, community\, and hands-on impact at one of CSUN’s most cherished landmarks—the Orange Grove (located between Zelzah & Lindley\, east of The Soraya). \nThis year\, the Orange Grove Cleanup is proud to be one of the featured service projects during Matador’s Day of Service\, a campus-wide day dedicated to giving back. Planted in the 1940s\, the five-acre grove along Nordhoff Street is home to more than 400 Valencia orange trees and stands as one of the last remaining orange groves from the San Fernando Valley’s agricultural past. \nVolunteers will help care for and maintain the grove by pruning and supporting the health of the trees\, ensuring strong future harvests. The fruit grown here serves a bigger purpose—helping stock the CSUN Food Pantry and supporting food pantries across Los Angeles County with fresh\, nutritious oranges. \nSign Up Here! (CSUN login required to register.) \nMatador’s Day of Service Schedule: \n\n8:00–8:30 a.m. | Check-in & light breakfast at Matador Square\n8:30–9:45 a.m. | Welcome and project assignments at Matador Square\n9:45–10:00 a.m. | Transition to project locations\n10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. | Service projects (Orange Grove Clean-Up; Children’s Center & Basic Needs)\n12:00–12:15 p.m. | Transition back to Matador Square\n12:15–1:00 p.m. | Closing remarks and grab-and-go lunch\n\nThis is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours\, enjoy the outdoors\, and make a tangible difference—right here on campus and beyond. \nFor questions about this event\, please contact Jennifer Herrera via email at jennifer.herrera-alvarado@csun.edu. \nSign Up Here!
