SUMMARY:Africana Studies Week: Lecture and Alumni Panel
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, November 4\, 2024\nLecture: 12:00pm-12:45pm\nAlumni Panel: 1:00pm-2:15p\nLocation: Lake View Terrace | University Student Union (USU) \n\nAgenda\n12:00pm Introduction / Welcome \n\nDr. Marquita Gammage\, Chair\, AFRS\nDr. Cedric Hackett\, Moderator\, Director of DHIAA\, Prof. AFRS\n\n12:05pm Keynote Address: “Cementing Our Legacy: Heroic Past\, Transformative Achievements\, Immanent Dangers”\n \n\nKeynote Address: Dr. Selase Williams\, Former Africana Studies Chair\n\nSee abstract for this talk\n\n\n\n1:00pm Alumni Panel \n\nModerated by Dr. Lizbeth Gant Britton\nPanelists: Tyrone (T-Fox) Fox; Dynasty Taylor; Shante Morgan; Patrick Johnson; Dr. Carroll Brown III\n\n2:15pm End of Event \n\nAbout Our Speaker\nSelase W. Williams\nSelase W. Williams retired from distinguished service as Provost and VP for Academic Affairs\, six years each at Southern Connecticut State University and Lesley University.  He played pivotal roles in strategic planning\, building or enhancing programs to improve student retention/success\, and in advancing diversity/inclusion/equity (e.g. Urban Scholars Initiative and Task Force on Social Justice in Teaching and Learning). \nWhile Chair of the Pan African Studies Department at CSUN (1988-1994)\, he was elected President of the National Council for Black Studies\, Inc. (1988-1992).  He co-chaired (with William Little) the first NCBS International Conference in 1993 in Accra\, Ghana.  Ford Foundation grants supported Summer Institutes for new scholars and a “Crossing Borders” initiative at CSUDH. \nWilliams’ scholarship focuses on the history\, structure\, and politics of African American Language\, Sierra Leone Krio\, the role of Black Studies in the academy\, and education for Black liberation.  He is a contributor to and co-editor of a book entitled The Borders in All of Us: New Approaches to Three Global Diasporic Societies.  His most recent publication is a book\, co-authored with Tom Spencer-Walters\, entitled Sierra Leone Krio: Language\, Culture\, and Traditions\, Published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group\, Inc. (2024). \nSelase W. Williams earned a B.A. in Linguistics and an M.A. in African Languages and Literature from the University of Wisconsin\, and a PH.D. in Linguistics from Indiana University. \nKeynote Address Abstract\nThis address explains what constitutes a “legacy” by tracing the origin of the word and related English words\, as well as how the discipline originally known as Black Studies earned the status of a legacy in American higher education.  This legacy was forged in the crucible of Eurocentric institutions\, laws\, and standards by bold individual scholars intent on correcting the history of peoples of African descent and linked their mission to the struggle for liberation and civil rights.  As the doors to American higher education became cracked\, it soon became apparent that the same backlash that followed enslavement\, Jim Crow\, and the Civil Rights Movement would confront those trying to institutionalize the true story of the African World Experience and its relationship with Europe.  While acknowledging the valiant achievements of Africana Studies and addressing internal challenges\, Dr. Williams warns of the “White Supremacist” elements in our society that threaten to nostalgically return America to the “good old days” prior to civil rights legislation\, equal educational opportunity\, and programs supporting diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.  The biggest threat facing America today are the policies and proposals present in Project 2025\, a 900+ page manifesto sponsored by the Heritage Society and written by some of the most extreme radical republicans\, many of whom are\, or have been\, senior advisors to Donald J. Trump.  Most of the proposals advanced in that document would undo the work of centuries of Americans of diverse backgrounds to create a more equitable and humane society. \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Africana Studies are committed to making our events accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:CSUN Youth Symphony - Concert 1\, 1PM: Camerata and Symphony
DESCRIPTION:CSUN Youth Orchestra\nCamerata & Symphony\nNovember 17 at 1:00 pm Plaza Del Sol\, $12 \n  \nPROGRAM LINK \nThe CSUN Youth Orchestras program is a vibrant multi-orchestra program for young musicians from San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas. Currently there are over 250 students enrolled in the program. The six ensembles meet on a weekly basis on Saturdays or Sundays. The groups are conducted by some of the finest music educators in Southern California. Auditions take place in early September and also in the late spring. \nThe Camerata Strings\nKimberly Blake-Kilgore\, Conductor\nSince 1991\, the Camerata Strings under the direction of Kimberly Blake-Kilgore\, has provided string musicians with the opportunity to participate in an outstanding and rewarding intermediate string orchestra program. The orchestra is composed of approximately 40 auditioned musicians from the San Fernando Valley\, Simi Valley\, Conejo Valley and surrounding communities. In this group we offer the opportunity for string musicians to learn the skills necessary for successful orchestral playing. Orchestral techniques are taught with special emphasis on the following: developing more advanced musicianship skills\, blending with others\, following the conductor\, bow technique\, dynamics\, learning to work with other musicians\, weekly practice techniques\, auditioning skills\, and learning to polish orchestral music as a cohesive ensemble ready for performance. The repertoire for Camerata Strings includes arranged and original classical symphonic works from various style periods ranging from Baroque to Contemporary\, as well as familiar themes from movie scores. \nKimberly Blake-Kilgore earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University\, Northridge\, where she studied violin performance with Kathleen Lenski. She has built a reputation as a renowned private teacher for young violinists since 1980. As the founder of the CSUNYO Camerata Strings\, Mrs. Kilgore has been conducting the ensemble since 1991. As a professional freelance violinist\, she has performed with numerous orchestras throughout the Los Angeles area\, including the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra. She was privileged to tour with conductor Kent Nagano throughout the Caribbean and the British Isles. In 1983\, Kimberly was a member of the International Philharmonic\, performing at the prestigious Edinburgh Music Festival in Scotland. She has toured throughout Europe\, Australia\, Mexico\, Australia\, and the Caribbean performing with her violin. Kimberly has enjoyed a diverse career in the LA studios which includes recording for TV\, motion pictures\, and various pop\, jazz and classical recording artists. As violin soloist\, she toured and recorded with R&B singer Teena Marie. She has performed and recorded with such greats as Jazz artist Ray Charles\, Placido Domingo\, Michael Bolton\, Laurie Anderson\, Rod Stewart\, Everette Harp\, and others. \nKimberly is highly motivated to provide opportunities for children to experience music. As a young violinist\, she had the opportunity to perform under several great conductors including Kent Nagano\, Yehudi Menuhin\, Calvin Simmons and Denis de Coteau. These conductors influenced her life and made a huge impact on her approach to teaching music. She has been successful in helping create a strong strings program in the elementary schools in Thousand Oaks where she lives with her husband studio percussionist Brian. \nThe Symphony\nThe Symphony is an intermediate orchestra of 70-90 members and plays both standard works and arrangements. Players are expected to have approximately four years or more of experience. Auditions take place through video auditions between July 1 and August 31 of each year. \nElizabeth Blake\, Conductor\nElizabeth Blake is a Pasadena native who began her violin studies at the age of three. She earned a Bachelor of Music Performance in violin from Northwestern University in 1989\, and moved to Tennessee\, where she served as Assistant Principal Second Violin in the Knoxville Symphony and Chamber Orchestras for seven years. During that time\, Ms. Blake appeared several times as the featured soloist with the Chamber Orchestra\, as well as in frequent performances for the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Music Series and on local radio broadcasts. \nIn 1997 Mrs. Blake returned to California\, where she pursued a freelance performance career. She has toured with Michael Crawford\, Yanni\, and other international artists\, and has performed as principal second violin for the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic\, the California Philharmonic\, the Santa Maria Philharmonic\, and the West Coast Chamber Orchestra\, as well as in the sections of the New West Symphony and other orchestras throughout the Los Angeles area. She can also be heard on soundtracks for Sony\, Warner Brothers and Castle Rock Entertainment. \nMs. Blake began her teaching career in 1981 at the age of 15\, giving private violin and viola instruction. While with the Knoxville Symphony\, she was an active member of the KSO Youth Education and Outreach Program\, bringing classical music into the Knox County public schools. In 2001 she founded the String program at Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks\, and in 2007 took over the Orchestra program at Westlake High School. Both schools have thriving orchestras\, and have received superior ratings at more than 75 festival appearances over the past twenty years. \n  \nSuggested Parking in Lot G4 \nTICKETS: $10 to $22

SUMMARY:Why do we have rituals? Guest Speaker\, Dimitris Xygalatas
DESCRIPTION:A word from the special guest speaker: From weddings to college graduations and from prayers to painful fire-walking ceremonies\, ritual is everywhere. At first glance\, such activities might seem pointless. So why do we all engage in them? Anthropologists have long proposed that rituals persist because they convey certain benefits to their practitioners and their communities. But how can we study these ostensible benefits\, given the contextually sensitive nature of cultural practices? In this talk\, I will present an interdisciplinary research program that combines laboratory and field methods to explore the puzzle of ritual in real-life settings\, from some of the most mundane to some of the most extraordinary rituals in the world. Drawing upon my findings\, I will also explore the implications for other domains\, like sports\, entertainment\, and politics. \nRSVP to join guest speaker\, Dimitris Xygalatas

SUMMARY:Zine-Making for Advocacy and Activism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get your message out\, and be seen with your zine! \nJoin the Library for a hands-on workshop exploring zine-making as a tool for advocacy and activism. Workshop participants will engage with the radical history of zines\, create their own\, and gain access to Know Your Rights information along with campus and community resources. \nThe workshop will focus on how to create zines for activism and advocacy. Register now and start brainstorming issues that you want to advocate for or inform your community about. Our Librarian zine-facilitators will guide you in developing your ideas\, gathering information\, and designing your self-published zine. But\, don’t worry if you don’t have a topic for this theme – ALL zine ideas and interests are welcome! \nCome\, create\, connect\, and enjoy light snacks while you zine! \nThis event is part of the Library’s Celebrando Cultura activities happening September 15 through October 15. Visit the Library’s Latinx/a/o/e Heritage Month Book Display in the lobby for books and literature that celebrate and elevate the Latinx diaspora. \nWhat is a Zine?\nA zine is a small handmade book or magazine that can be self-published and shared. People make zines for many different reasons: to spread the word about an event or political movement\, share information\, start community discussions\, or even to share art. Since the 1930s\, zines have sparked fandoms and been vital to punk and underground scenes\, feminist and queer movements\, and activist networks. They are a radical and countercultural means of self-expression and information-sharing that exist outside of mainstream publishing channels. \nZines are about DIY (do-it-yourself) creativity\, sharing ideas\, and building community. Zines can be printed in small batches on just a few pages and are often small enough to fit in a pocket. There are many styles of zines\, from folded paper to digitally published! All zines are meant to be shared\, copied and passed around. What kind of zine will you create? \nPlease RSVP on our event page.
