Drawing on Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands framework\, the dialogue will address how colonial borders have produced fragmentation and dispossession\, while Indigenous kinship\, governance\, and resistance continue to operate across and beyond imposed fronteras. \nThis event is open to the campus and broader community and is especially relevant for those engaged in Indigenous Studies\, Ethnic Studies\, decolonial theory\, and Native sovereignty. \n \n

SUMMARY:CSUN Orange Grove Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:As part of Matador’s Day of Service\nSaturday\, February 7 | 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. \nJoin the CSUN Institute for Sustainability and Food Forward for a morning of service\, community\, and hands-on impact at one of CSUN’s most cherished landmarks—the Orange Grove (located between Zelzah & Lindley\, east of The Soraya). \nThis year\, the Orange Grove Cleanup is proud to be one of the featured service projects during Matador’s Day of Service\, a campus-wide day dedicated to giving back. Planted in the 1940s\, the five-acre grove along Nordhoff Street is home to more than 400 Valencia orange trees and stands as one of the last remaining orange groves from the San Fernando Valley’s agricultural past. \nVolunteers will help care for and maintain the grove by pruning and supporting the health of the trees\, ensuring strong future harvests. The fruit grown here serves a bigger purpose—helping stock the CSUN Food Pantry and supporting food pantries across Los Angeles County with fresh\, nutritious oranges. \nSign Up Here! (CSUN login required to register.) \nMatador’s Day of Service Schedule: \n\n8:00–8:30 a.m. | Check-in & light breakfast at Matador Square\n8:30–9:45 a.m. | Welcome and project assignments at Matador Square\n9:45–10:00 a.m. | Transition to project locations\n10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. | Service projects (Orange Grove Clean-Up; Children’s Center & Basic Needs)\n12:00–12:15 p.m. | Transition back to Matador Square\n12:15–1:00 p.m. | Closing remarks and grab-and-go lunch\n\nThis is a great opportunity to earn volunteer hours\, enjoy the outdoors\, and make a tangible difference—right here on campus and beyond. \nFor questions about this event\, please contact Jennifer Herrera via email at jennifer.herrera-alvarado@csun.edu. \nSign Up Here! SUMMARY:Update Dec. 3\, 3025: Illustrating Your Impact
DESCRIPTION:December 4\, 2025\nRSVP to this Event \nZoom link for this event. \n\nUpdate!\nFor our final faculty workshop\, we’re going to try something different! Instead of meeting in the Whitsett Room\, Andy and Alby will be recording their discussion on how to plan and present your project’s impact in the Psychology Podcast space. We will also be live on Zoom starting at 3:45 pm if you want to join us and submit any questions. \nThis semester\, we have been discussing strategic fund seeking and where to find financial support for our work. But as many turn their attention to private and foundation funding\, it becomes more critical that we effectively communicating how our work aligns with the impact funders want to make in the world. Therefore\, Andy will share insight and tips for preparing a strong evaluation plan. We’ll be demonstrating the power of logic models as a road map not only for evaluation but also the timeline and budget of your project. The workshop will be posted to the college YouTube page afterwards. \n\nBefore providing support\, funders and partners want to assess the impact you’ve had or are expecting to make with your project. After funding your project\, they want to be shown their investment was worthwhile. In this session\, participants will learn how to create a logic model and design a robust evaluation plan. Learn how to assess the data you need and how to collect it. These tools provide another way to align your project design to your funder’s priorities by connecting the details from beginning to end. While not necessary\, participants are encouraged to come with a project in mind so we can work through the process together. \nGuest Presenter:\n\nAndy Ainsworth\, Director\, CSUN Center for Assessment\, Research & Evaluation\n\nEach session will be introduced and moderated by Alby Luchko\, Contracts\, Grants & Research Development Officer for CSBS. Everyone is welcome including students and staff! \nRSVP to this Event \nZoom link for this event. \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is committed to making our events accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:CSBS Dean's Discussion Series: Olympia LePoint\, award-winning rocket scientist\, author\, TED speaker and TV Journalist
DESCRIPTION:Stop AI Psychosis & AI Poisoning\, Policies for Human Safety in AI\nDate:  Thursday\, November 20\, 2025\nTime: 4:00 – 5:30 PMLocation: Whitsett Room | Sierra Hall 451\nSpeaker: Olympia LePoint\, award-winning rocket scientist\, author\, TED speaker and TV Journalist\nHosted by: CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences – Dean’s Discussion Series \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nDescription:\nIn the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence\, new threats are emerging that go beyond biased algorithms or mis-calibrated models. Join us for a compelling Dean’s Discussion with rocket scientist\, author\, and AI advocate Olympia LePoint as she illuminates the twin dangers of AI psychosis—the phenomenon of wildly unpredictable AI behaviour when human-facing systems go off script—and AI/data poisoning\, where malicious inputs or corrupted data warp or weaponize AI outputs. Drawing on her decades-long career launching rockets for NASA\, her bestselling “Answers Unleashed” educational platform\, and her deep interest in AI literacy and human-centred safeguards\, LePoint will map out policy and institutional strategies to protect communities\, educate future leaders\, and ensure AI serves rather than harms humanity. Whether you’re in social policy\, education\, health care\, technology or administration\, you’ll leave this talk with a sharper understanding of: \n\nwhy human safety must be built into AI from the ground up\,\nhow poisoning attacks work and what to watch for\,\nreal-world policy levers institutions can adopt today\, and\nhow individuals and teams can become smarter consumers\, designers or legislators of AI.\n\nA moderated Q&A will follow—bring your questions\, concerns and ideas. Together we’ll explore how policy\, practice and human values intersect in the age of increasingly autonomous systems. \nRequesting Accommodations\nThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is committed to making our events accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:Climate Change Impacts on Power Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Event Description\n\nRSVP for this Event \n\nHow resilient is our power infrastructure in the face of a changing climate? Across North America\, extreme weather events\, heatwaves\, and wildfires are increasingly stressing electrical grids\, raising urgent questions about how to adapt energy systems for the future. \nJoin us for a special talk by Dr. Pierre-Olivier Pineau\, Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at HEC Montréal and Chair in Energy Sector Management. Dr. Pineau will present findings from a major research project funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ)\, which examines the economic and operational impacts of climate change on energy infrastructure—including transmission and distribution networks\, transformers\, and other critical assets. He will share his team’s modelling approach\, preliminary results\, and the broader implications for managing and adapting power systems. \nWith wildfires in California and beyond already exposing vulnerabilities in existing grids\, this research offers timely insights for both local and global energy resilience. \nDate: October 29\, 2025\nTime: 11:30AM – 1:00PM\nLocation: Whitsett Room | Sierra Hall\, Room 451 \nLight refreshments will be served. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Pineau (PhD\, HEC Montréal\, 2000) is an internationally recognized expert in energy policy and management\, with a particular focus on electricity sector reforms and sustainability. He has published extensively on energy systems and sustainable development\, contributes regularly to public policy debates\, and is the author of numerous government reports. His latest book\, The Energy Balance (in French)\, was released in February 2023.
