SUMMARY:iwitness: narratives of resistance
DESCRIPTION:August 26 – October 22\, 2024\nExhibition Reception: Thursday\, September 12 from 5:00-7:30pm\nFor almost three decades\, the iwitness project has been a multidimensional effort to resist the denial of the history of The Armenian Genocide (1915-23). Led by artists Ara Oshagan\, Levon Parian\, and architect Vahagn Thomasian—all descendants from Western Armenia—the project has photographed\, recorded\, archived\, and shared the images and stories of Armenian Genocide survivors in poignant and often unexpected ways. The project has taken multiple forms over the years – from small\, intimate portrait shows to massive public art installations to a permanent monument – and the current exhibition presents a survey of this multifaceted endeavor. Through each iteration of the project\, iwitness continues to fight the erasure of the Genocide by uplifting the images and voices of survivors and creating new generations of witnesses to their stories. \n  \n \nImage credit: Ara Oshagan and Levon Parian\, Sion Abajian\, b. SUMMARY:Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:September 3 – December 5\, 2024\nReception: September 12 from 5:00pm-7:30pm\n \nBefore You Now focuses on the enduring theme of the artist’s self-portrait\, as seen in a selection of works from LACMA’s collections of photographs\, prints\, drawings\, videos\, and installation art. Primarily featuring contemporary makers\, the exhibition is an introduction to seeing American artists as they see themselves—or as they want to be seen by their public. They are shown contemplating their physicality in realistic fashion\, highlighting their persona through symbolic tropes\, or utilizing humor or conceptual methods to enlighten\, exaggerate\, or camouflage their reflective selves. Over 50 artists—including Laura Aguilar\, Kwame Brathwaite\, Kalli Arte Collective\, Roger Shimomura\, Cindy Sherman\, Rodrigo Valenzuela\, and June Wayne—display an ongoing fascination with\, or return to\, the self-portrait. Before You Now aims to broaden the topic to include many whose practice leans into an autobiographical narrative\, and explores artists who are adding to and redefining our culture by expanding on ideas of identity. \n\nTo view more videos in this series\, visit the LACMA YouTube Channel \n  \n  \n\nMain Gallery Hours\nMonday: 10am to 4pm\nTuesday: 10am to 4pm\nWednesday: 12pm to 7pm\nThursday: 12pm to 7pm\nFriday: By Appointment\nSaturday: By Appointment\nSunday: CLOSED \nFree Admission\n\nNOTE: Unless otherwise noted\, Riverside Art Museum (RAM) and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture (The Cheech) have provided these images for non-commercial purposes only associated with its own exhibitions. SUMMARY:ChamberMusic@CSUN Andrew McIntosh & Friends
DESCRIPTION:ChamberMusic@CSUN: Andrew McIntosh & Friends\nComplete Rosary Sonatas by Heinrich Biber\nSeptember 14 at 7:30 pm\, Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall\, $10 – $22 \n  \n“If I were making my usual yearly list of memorable live performances\, I would include Michael Tilson Thomas’s buoyant concerts at the L.A. Philharmonic\, in January; the première of Salvatore Sciarrino’s enigmatically radiant opera “Venere e Adone\,” in Hamburg\, in May; Andrew McIntosh’s heady traversal of Heinrich Biber’s Rosary Sonatas\, in Pasadena\,…” \nhttps://www.newyorker.com/culture/2023-in-review/notable-classical-recordings-of-2023\nJoined by Ian Pritchard (harpsichord/organ)\, Maxine Eilander (baroque harp)\, Malachai Bandy (viola da gamba)\, baroque violinist Andrew McIntosh will give a rare complete performance of Heinrich Biber’s Rosary Sonatas. Composed circa 1675\, these fifteen magnificent pieces evoke the entire range of human experience\, from tender and sublime to outrage and triumph\, and follow the story of the life of Christ as depicted in the Catholic Mysteries of the Rosary. Radically virtuosic and experimental\, each sonata features a different tuning on the open strings of the violin\, creating unique resonances and timbres that are matched individually to the characters portrayed in each sonata. The fifteen Rosary sonatas are divided into three sections\, each lasting approximately 40 minutes: the joyful mysteries\, the sorrowful mysteries\, and the glorious mysteries. The performance will be presented with two intermissions. \n  \nChamberMusic@CSUN is proudly sponsored by the Colburn Foundation and the CSUN Foundation. \nParking via Kiosks in Lot B1 \nTICKETS: $10 to $22
