SUMMARY:Beyond The Self Portrait Show
DESCRIPTION:Visit the “Beyond The Self Portrait” Show led by CSUN Photo Society and CSUN Printmaking Society in the Manzanita Gallery.\nThis exhibit will be open to visit until March 12\, 2026.\nEach person is shaped by the people they love\, the places they call home\, and the experiences that leave their mark. Oftentimes\, a self portrait captures only the physical appearance of a person\, leaving out the years of life they have lived and the stories that define them. As a collaborative project between the CSUN Photo Society and the CSUN Printmaking Society\, Beyond the Self Portrait began as an exploration of what a self portrait can truly become. \nWe invited our members to share work that reveals a piece of their life\, offering the campus community a chance to connect with the person behind the art. We encouraged them to move beyond the traditional constraints of a self portrait and look deeper into the often unseen aspects of their inner identity. By bringing together different practices and mediums\, this exhibition shows that a self portrait can move beyond appearance and become a reflection of memory\, experience\, and identity. \n  \n

This event is co-hosted by the student organization from Family and Consumer Sciences\, TRENDS. Refreshments will be served. \nFor more than two decades\, the clothing designs of Thomas “TJ” Walker have been featured among the pages of such prominent publications as: Forbes\, Details\, Code\, Black Enterprise\, Elle\, Source\, Sportswear International\, Vibe and Women’s Wear Daily. Known primarily for his design prowess in the menswear apparel industry\, Walker is at heart a true fine artist. DESCRIPTION:Make your voice heard—let your zine be seen!\nJoin the Library for this hands-on workshop that will explore how zine-making can be used to document\, share\, and uplift resistant (as opposed to dominant) histories. Participants will learn more about what resistant histories are and will begin creating their own zine. This workshop is part of CSUN Library’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month. \nRegister today and start brainstorming about the stories and lesser-known historical narratives that you care about and want to share with your community. Our librarian facilitators will guide you through shaping your ideas\, gathering information\, and designing your self-published zine. \nNo set theme? No problem—ALL zine ideas and creative expressions are welcome! \nCome\, connect\, and enjoy light snacks while you zine!\nThis event is part of the Library’s activities for Native American Heritage Month. Visit the Library’s Native American Heritage Month Book Display in the lobby for books and literature that celebrate and elevate indigenous voices. \nWhat is a Zine?\nA zine is a small handmade book or magazine that can be self-published and shared. People make zines for many different reasons: to spread the word about an event or political movement\, share information\, start community discussions\, or even to share art. Since the 1930s\, zines have sparked fandoms and been vital to punk and underground scenes\, feminist and queer movements\, and activist networks. They are a radical and countercultural means of self-expression and information-sharing that exist outside of mainstream publishing channels. \nZines are about DIY (do-it-yourself) creativity\, sharing ideas\, and building community. Zines can be printed in small batches on just a few pages and are often small enough to fit in a pocket. There are many styles of zines\, from folded paper to digitally published! All zines are meant to be shared\, copied and passed around. What kind of zine will you create?
