SUMMARY:iwitness: narratives of resistance
DESCRIPTION:August 26 – October 22\, 2024\nExhibition Reception: Thursday\, September 12 from 5:00-7:30pm\nFor almost three decades\, the iwitness project has been a multidimensional effort to resist the denial of the history of The Armenian Genocide (1915-23). Led by artists Ara Oshagan\, Levon Parian\, and architect Vahagn Thomasian—all descendants from Western Armenia—the project has photographed\, recorded\, archived\, and shared the images and stories of Armenian Genocide survivors in poignant and often unexpected ways. The project has taken multiple forms over the years – from small\, intimate portrait shows to massive public art installations to a permanent monument – and the current exhibition presents a survey of this multifaceted endeavor. Through each iteration of the project\, iwitness continues to fight the erasure of the Genocide by uplifting the images and voices of survivors and creating new generations of witnesses to their stories. \n  \n \nImage credit: Ara Oshagan and Levon Parian\, Sion Abajian\, b. Marash\, 1908\, 1996. SUMMARY:Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:September 3 – December 5\, 2024\nReception: September 12 from 5:00pm-7:30pm\n \nBefore You Now focuses on the enduring theme of the artist’s self-portrait\, as seen in a selection of works from LACMA’s collections of photographs\, prints\, drawings\, videos\, and installation art. Primarily featuring contemporary makers\, the exhibition is an introduction to seeing American artists as they see themselves—or as they want to be seen by their public. They are shown contemplating their physicality in realistic fashion\, highlighting their persona through symbolic tropes\, or utilizing humor or conceptual methods to enlighten\, exaggerate\, or camouflage their reflective selves. Over 50 artists—including Laura Aguilar\, Kwame Brathwaite\, Kalli Arte Collective\, Roger Shimomura\, Cindy Sherman\, Rodrigo Valenzuela\, and June Wayne—display an ongoing fascination with\, or return to\, the self-portrait. Before You Now aims to broaden the topic to include many whose practice leans into an autobiographical narrative\, and explores artists who are adding to and redefining our culture by expanding on ideas of identity. \n\nTo view more videos in this series\, visit the LACMA YouTube Channel \n  \n  \n\nMain Gallery Hours\nMonday: 10am to 4pm\nTuesday: 10am to 4pm\nWednesday: 12pm to 7pm\nThursday: 12pm to 7pm\nFriday: By Appointment\nSaturday: By Appointment\nSunday: CLOSED \nFree Admission\n\nNOTE: Unless otherwise noted\, Riverside Art Museum (RAM) and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture (The Cheech) have provided these images for non-commercial purposes only associated with its own exhibitions. SUMMARY:The Sandwich Space: Using Statistical Breakdowns to Explore Semantic Categories
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Linguistics/TESL Presents\nSarah MacDugall Ph.D. Student\, University at Buffalo\nBackground: The question of whether a hotdog is a sandwich has been asked around dinner tables with friends\, at water coolers with coworkers\, and in an interview between Stephen Colbert and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Despite the cult popularity of this question\, very little quantitative work has been done to address it. \nThis project explores how certain words or concepts fit into the broader category of  “sandwich\,” how they relate to each other within that category\, and how the space might differ across various language communities. It also considers how fuzzy categories might be approached when they have real world legal implications. This unresolved line of questioning offers several possibilities for future work in linguistic\, computational\, and cognitive domains. \nRegister to join via Zoom\nThe Sandwich Space: Using Statistical Breakdowns to Explore Semantic Categories\, event flyer (PDF)
