Speaking Up and Paying the Price: Dr. Clare Weber on Gendered Pay Inequity, Gender-Based Harassment, and Holding CSU Accountable

November 5 at 11:30 am to 12:45 pm
Virtual Event

Dr. Clare Weber spent more than 25 years in the California State University system, serving as a faculty member at Cal State Dominguez Hills and eventually as Vice Provost of Academic Affairs at Cal State San Bernardino. She was fired shortly after formally raising concerns that male administrators were paid more than she was. With co-plaintiff Dr. Anissa Rogers, the former Associate Dean at CSU’s Palm Desert campus, Weber sued the university. Their suit alleged that campus leadership fostered a hostile environment for women, in which complaints about gender inequity, harassment, and retaliation were ignored or punished. In October 2025, a Los Angeles jury awarded Rogers $6 million, finding that CSU had harassed and retaliated against her and failed to prevent the harassment. Before Weber’s claims could go to trial, CSU agreed to pay $12 million to resolve the case brought by both women, believed to be the largest employment discrimination settlement in the system’s history.

In this talk, Dr. Weber will share what it took to challenge one of the nation’s largest public university systems, the professional and personal risks she faced, and what institutions must do to protect employees who speak up instead of punishing them.
