Award:

Two (2) scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each.

Purpose

This scholarship honors the legacy of Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899–1976), an artist, poet, and musician celebrated for his message of universal harmony, compassion, and respect for all people. Known as the “Rebel Poet,” Nazrul’s life and work reflected courage, creativity, and a deep belief in the dignity of every individual.

The award recognizes students who 1) are pursuing a minor in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MEIS) OR who have taken MEIS related course work, 2) demonstrate academic promise, and 3) embody values consistent with Nazrul’s humanistic spirit through their learning, creativity, or community engagement.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  1. Be currently enrolled in the MEIS minor program or must have taken MEIS related courses.
  2. Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  3. Demonstrate commitment to building bridges across difference in their campus and/or community work.

Selection Criteria

The MEIS Program Chair will review all applications and select recipients through a holistic assessment of academic merit, a brief personal statement, and applicant’s contributions to the MEIS community.

Application Materials

Applicants must submit:

  • A personal statement (400–600 words) describing how their studies, creative work, campus involvement, or personal values reflect the spirit of compassion, courage, and inclusivity associated with Kazi Nazrul Islam.
  • An unofficial transcript.
  • Completed application cover sheet (see below)

Please send application materials to Dr. Khanum Shaikh, khanum.shaikh@csun.edu with “Kazi Nazrul Islam Scholarship Application” in the subject line. All materials must be submitted in pdf form by March 15th, 2026. Awards will be announced by April 1st, 2026. Scholarship recipients will be required to attend the community event in celebration of the life and works of Kazi Nazrul Islam scheduled for May 2nd, 2026.
